I disagree. Team are trading for 1/2 year of a 4th/5th starter. If shoe was on the other foot I wouldn't expect the Cubs to give up anything either.

I feel prospects have become insanely overvalued. Teams have become irrational and are guarding them with their life.

Agreed. They got a guy in return similar to Feldman, but younger with more cost control and the real motivation for the trade was the international cap space. Sure those are lottery tickets, but you acquire enough, one of them theoretically will hit.

This hording of international signing money could be a new market efficiency. It could be years before we know the tangible value of this thought process, but you have to give Epstoyer credit for trying this gambit

Do you think they turned down more? Probably all they could get.

And read that Fangraphs article. The international money is huge.

I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright and when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice, but still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

You have 29 more days to get a better offee. A lottery ticket and garbage isn't an offer you accept.

Feldman was having a career 1/2 year, I think there's a reasonable chance he could have fallen off by the deadline as well as risking a fluke injury.

I wouldn't call what they got back garbage and the timing had to be now while guys they want are still available, namely #1 rated prospect Elloy Jiminez. I don't know what time of future building blocks you expected to get back for a career 4th/5th starter. The money they get back for said lottery ticket is the best you could hope for.

You accept the international money because that's what you want to trade for. Forget the lottery tickets.

You also don't want to risk injury, or risk the fact he could have bad outings and lower his value. This trade is being praised by those who understand the importance of the international money/slots.

That's a risk you take with every player you're trying to trade. The Cubs could have made this same deal in May.

But today is the first day of the international FA signings. It looks like the Cubs are going to get the two best prospects out there. I think that is pretty good for a 4th starter. What did you want them to get?

For a guy coming off a 5.75 ERA year? Nope.

Again this is a trade that will still be there July 31st. It may shock you but I don't sit around and wait to hear or read what others think before giving my opinion. I'm confident enough in my thoughts.

Great point, Elloy isn't going to be around for 29 more days.

I wouldn't call what they got back garbage either. They got back a power bullpen arm who has had a good while short run aside from being awful this year. Arietta has potential as a starter in the 4th or 5th slot but just hasn't put it together. At worst he is still a decent bullpen arm.

Getting that money though could prove to be great if they get jimenez/geybar and whomever else they will sign. They have 4 or 5 million left. I wish they would go and steal Jose Hererra out from under the diamondbacks who are rumored to be offering him 1 mil. He is a venezuelan catcher that has been spoken highly of.

When you wait until the end of the deadline a lot of times you get garbage or damaged goods back.

Feldman was the 1 guy I was worried about having some bad starts before the deadline which would have screwed his value. Glad he was the first to go.

A lot of teams will overpay for pitchers worse than Feldman at the deadline. Nothing about his switch to the NL says it couldn't hold up for 3 more starts.

I'm not surprised. When you read or listen to what others have to say before having a thought it really isn't your opinion it's theirs.

They got back a couple of pitchers with MLB experience and the cap room to sign prospects. Yeah the international signings could end up being bad but so could some A ball prospects that they might get from someone else.

Holy crap.

You would rather have your own, pure (likely worse) thought.... than your own thought based on all of the available information from others? WAT!?!?

If Garza didn't get hurt Feldman was probably going to the pen out of Spring Training. I think they were happier with Villenueva early on and he would have won the job. I am sure Jed and Theo are very happy with how things turned out.

Pitching is very valuable at the deadline. A decent prospect instead of reclamation projects and a lottery ticket.

Interesting and good point. The Garza injury definitely helped them get this return for Feldman.
