The Portland Trail Blazers helped theHouston Rockets create enough cap room to offer Dwight Howard a massive contract as they've agreed to take on Thomas Robinson's contract in exchange for the rights to two European draft picks. There is a chance Omer Asik could be on the block if Howard signs with the Rockets and he might end up with the Blazers.

From Chris Haynes of CSNNW.com: "One source who is tuned-in with how things could develop tells CSNNW.com that the Trail Blazers are in the Rockets' good graces, which could have an influence on where they choose to ship Asik when it's time to do so. The center position is a dire need for Portland, being that they were one of the worst defensive teams in the league."

Portland should have enough salary cap room to accept Robinson and Asik, but if they don't a possible sign-and-trade with J.J. Hickson might get a deal done. Haynes points out that both Hickson and Asik are represented by agent Andy Miller.

Asik is on the books at $8.37 million the next two years, although his actual pay is $5.2 million in 2013-14 and $14.9 million in 2014-15.

This makes no sense. Asik is a great defender on a poor defensive team. Trading him for JJ Hickson will make the Rockets even worse defensively. Hickson is pretty much on par with Carlos Boozer defensively.

i might rather have Asik & Robinson than Hickson and Howard

If I'm a Pacers fan, I don't like the 36 million/3 years contract West received today. He'll be making 12 million/year as a 33 and 34 year old, starting this season. Apparently the third year is a player option, and I don't see a 35 year old West turning down 12 million. I realize the cap hits may not be evenly distributed into 12 mil per year, but still this is a lot of money for an aging, undersized player who probably shouldn't be receiving this much love.

 The fuck why?

Apparently the recent labor disputes have done nothing to preclude teams from spending really bad money.

I'll give GarPax credit on one thing: While they rarely make major moves, at least they also rarely make long-term, expensive, bad moves.

i would compare that deal - in a sense- to the Asik deal

it's way too much money to be spending on that kind of player, but i feel like at the very least he's a solid player
not saying Splitter is as good/valuable as Asik, but I think he will improve and with Duncan theoretically getting less minutes each year he'll get more of an opportunity. i don't think it's crazy bad money, i think he'll contribute

Given his history, once he realizes what he's doing he'll probably demand a trade from LA before he signs the contract.

its really vexing to think that with what we now know, any GM would be interested all in Howard

the only angle i could see that makes sense is Dallas, from a PR/need to get some sort of relevance back/make a splash angle

you're right- Lakers would be locking themselves into bad
Atlanta? Golden State? i honestly don't see how he helps any of these other teams

and wtf is Houston doing playing musical chairs....let's get rid of our young talent under contract to sign this slacking apathetic oaf of a center to pair him with Asik!

i really think Howard is the player I dislike most in the league, wish he would just go away

Yeah I tend to agree with this, mostly based on the Spurs' reputation. Clearly they see something in this guy, and I'm inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Martin in Minny and Iguodala in a similarly non-competitive environment (potentially) makes me rue the NBA's overpopulation of teams problem. These guys aren't superstars or anything, but wasting away on bad teams for the rest of their careers will do nothing to even the playing field between the NBA haves and the have nots.

I am in a really bad thinking spot on the NBA. I like players to make money and I also like the cap to give the owners some ground as well. But this weird player movement era last 5-8 years has done nothing for me. Teams frozen, others making all sorts of machinations to try to get bad to get good, blowing off years to try for 2014. Not a good thing at all? I think football and hockey thrive because your team has a chance to do something year in and year out and change if they need too. There are 28 NBA teams fucking around with little or no chance of winning it all.

That new CBA they all signed onto last year is no joke. The tax implications of teams going over the cap just got real, real.

Just for instance, the Heat's Mike Miller has a $6.2 million contract this season. They are waaay over the cap. But they need players, and if they just outright amnesty him, there's no way to replace him other than with a veterans minimum million dollar guy.
BUT, by keeping him, and with the new escalator taxes, Mike Miller's ACTUAL salary hit on the Heat this season will be 21 MILLION DOLLARS.

Good then because if that is true the portlands and so on have a chance. I also would like to see teams draft and build to greatness than all this stuff I have seen last couple of days.

IDK maybe its the cap too though. So many teams paralyzed becaused they felt the need to give players the respect max contracts. Again idk?

All of this will change in the next 5 years when teams adjust to the new CBA. There will be stability.

That's where the triple escalator tax of doom comes into play. It's gonna become a very real issue for all.....except perhaps a couple of the big spenders like the Nets, Lakers, Knicks. But as you can see (looking at you Nets, Knicks), you still have to be smart even if you are loaded.

+1

I saw last night that Psycho T is going to be a UFA instead of a RFA cuz the Pacers are renouncing him. I hope the Bulls are getting Jim Belushi on the phone right now to call up Tyler and convince him to come to Chicago.

i'm going to ignore your larger point and just say that The Timberwolves will be SOLID next year
ASSUMING that they actually don't have massive injury woes and Rubio/Love miss 1/2 the years
IF you have both of them
plus Martin, remember Budinger missed the majority of the year too....great players to space the floor

Martin was a good add....they will be a playoff team for sure
OKC, there's plenty of room on the bus i'm driving

If any team gives Howard input on roster decisions they deserve to suck for a long long time.
