I don't think you have much of a choice unless you have a core of young talent. I don't blame the Cubs fans for being angry after not seeing a Cub WS in their lifetimes, but they have to rebuild with a young core then make the free agency splash after the Wrigley renovation and new TV network kicks in.

The difference is that the Royals are bad at scouting, drafting, and especially player development.

Theo and Jed have much better track records in that regard, in contrast to the Cubs's historical badness in scouting, drafting, and player development.

This was a five year project from day one. I don't think you are getting that... the Cubs were the lowest of the low in those departments. Signing a bunch of dumb free agents like Hendry was not a winning plan even in the era of unlimited salaries. Now with the luxury tax and compensatory picks, it is an especially bad strategy.

Quick question, what do you think the Cardinals are doing better? I'll tell you, it's scouting, drafting, and player development.
