One show to check out is The Killing, which is the most unrelentingly bleak TV series I've ever encountered. It's very well-written and extremely well-acted. The teen-aged street characters are particularly well realized.

Is The Killing an ongoing story or does each season focus on a new murder or what?

The first two seasons were about the same murder. New crimes are being investigated in the third season, although they appear to have some connection to events that transpired earlier in the series.

In my view, Justified eclipsed Mad Men in 2013.

I wouldn't argue with you. I love Justified. They both have strong characters outside of Raylan or Don that can carry entire story arcs and be as interesting.

I got caught up in the Bob Benson thing this year. He cracked me up whenever he showed up on screen with his extra cup of coffee. But, I loved the payoff when he went dark at the end, kind of predictable, but still good stuff.

I thought this season had some down moments but relative to other shows it is consistently top notch. I thought Jon Hamm was excellent in the finale and also in his reaction to being caught by Sally when he's lost in the lobby, not knowing what to do next.

I've never been one to go back and watch TV episodes again, but my Daughter convinced my Wife to finally sign up for Netflix, I decided to give it a try and watched all 13 episodes of season 1 of Mad Men in 2 nights, and now I'm going to watch every episode in order. It really helps bring clarity to many of the complex issues and characters on the show.
Jon Hamm of one hell of an actor. His character has so much baggage. He deals with his problems by banging Women that he barely knows. He has no one that he can talk with and confide in.
My favorite character on the show though by far is Roger Sterling.
Betty and Joan were hot as hell in season 1.

In the late 1960's there is no way a guy with the background & baggage of a Don Draper could succeed in Politics.

I just watched that final scene again. It's such a perfect scene. With one line of dialogue and a look, Don reveals more about himself to Sally than he ever has. Combined with the perfect use of the song Both Sides, Now, I never get tired of watching it.

I just wish AMC was smart enough to let that sink in with the song and the credits rather than busting in with promos for The Killing.

I watched the final scene again tonight about 10 times. Fantastic.

yeah but there's another dead person, ken. they're d-e-a-d, dead. never forget!

when i said that i bet don gets into politics, i never said that he'd be the candidate. i could see him being a part of a team that does some dirty work for nixon or something along those lines.... but that's just my gut feeling.

Season 6 ends with Joni Mitchells "Both Sides Now", which I believe is a reference to the 2 sides of Dons life.
I'm thinking that maybe the way this show ends is Don moves to LA to marry Anna, the real Mrs. Draper.
California has always played a part in this show & Don loves in there. The scenes with Don in Cali have him drinking either milk or iced tea, never booze. This is where Don will end up.

Really? Wow. I don't remember that. What season did she die? I am about midway through season 3 as of last night.

AMC senses its impending irrelevance...

I hate this kind of crap.

Quote:
Mad Men’ to Split Final Season Into Two Parts
By BILL CARTER
Published: September 17, 2013

AMC is having a hard time separating from its hit series. On Tuesday the network announced that instead of a final season of “Mad Men,” as was planned for next spring, the much-acclaimed series will divide in two, pushing off the finale for another year.

A day earlier, the network announced it would spin off a new series from its hit zombie show “The Walking Dead” and last week it made a deal to spin off a show from “Breaking Bad.”

In the case of “Mad Men,” AMC is following the strategy it took with “Breaking Bad” in dividing up a planned final season into two installments, but in this case it will be waiting a full year between seven-episode arcs. That means the final season is really two entirely separate ones, at least in terms of scheduling.

The first seven shows will be shown next spring under the title “The Beginning.” The second group will be shown in 2015 and will be called “The End of an Era."’ The show’s creator, Matthew Weiner, will shoot all the episodes in one production cycle, so in effect, AMC will simply be storing away the last seven episodes for a year.

The decision seems to underscore AMC’s concern about losing its two original blockbuster dramas within a year of each other. The network shattered almost every television precedent by developing and showing two prominent and highly successful television dramas over the same time span. “Breaking Bad” is ending in two weeks in a flurry of rapturous praise. “Mad Men” was scheduled to conclude next spring.

That would have left AMC with only “The Walking Dead” as a breakout hit. Its other current dramas, “Hell on Wheels” and this year’s “Low Winter Sun,” have not remotely approached the level of success that “Breaking Bad” or “Mad Men” did. AMC canceled “The Killing” (for a second time) earlier this month.

So the network will now get two more chances, instead of one, to try to introduce new shows using “Mad Men” as a springboard. But in doing so, it will ask more patience from the show’s fans. The one benefit is the addition of one episode beyond what had been originally planned.

In a statement, Mr. Weiner said, “We plan to take advantage of this chance to have a more elaborate story told in two parts, which can resonate a little bit longer in the minds of our audience.”

Hey it worked for Breaking Bad.

They need to find some new programming.

Low Winter Sun isn't terrible.

8 episodes is barely passable. 7 is not enough.

Mad Men is a slow burn. I fear that will change the pacing to facilitate a mid-season cliffhanger or try to do a mini-7 episode arc. Not good.

Well that sucks. On the other hand, this prolongs the end of the show.

Sunday nights are gonna suck when both Breaking Bad & Mad Men are gone.

I actually go to Albuquerque to watch Breaking Bad.

Because I'm a fan.

You're not a fan of meth production. You're a fan of television.
