Nope. What made our country great is rich guys who split their time between the Hamptons, Aspen and the French Riveria and pay lobbyists lots of money so they can destroy the groundwater and keep the minimum wage down. That and the forced enslavement of an entire race. Go America!

 Oh JORR you da man.

Tell us all a story. Please. Pretty Please.

 Okay, if you insist.

So, I belong to this private club and every year we have a golf tournament in June and a bocce tournament in September. The golf tournament was last week and afterward a bunch of us went back to our clubhouse (not the one at the golf course) to have a few more drinks. My business partner doesn't belong to the club but he's been up there with me more than a few times. In fact, the two of us ran second in the bocce tournament last year. Pretty good since there are a lot of old mustaches straight off the boat that enter this thing. The two guys who won the tournament weren't Italian either which caused some consternation among the old line membership. And to make things worse, neither of them was even an actual club member. One of those guys played in the golf tournament last week and came back to the clubhouse with us too. Oddly enough, just since last September this guy's hair has gone from a light brown/dishwater blonde to a shocking white.

Well, we're sitting around the bar and my partner and this guy are talking and my partner is telling the guy what a great bocce player the guy's "younger brother" is. The guy is looking at my partner like he's out of his fucking mind and he tells him that his brother never played in the bocce tournament. My partner says, "Uh, oh, well, uh, I'm sorry, the guy that won last year looked exactly like you but younger. It's weird that he isn't your brother." Finally, I leaned over and said, "You fuckin' idiot. It was him. His hair has just gone white."

JORR, I have no idea if this stuff really happens to you or not, but you missed your calling as a novelist or oral historian. Studs Terkel has died, but his spirit lives on in you. Man you have a great eye for meaningful detail.

To Bryan's point, the average American definitely works too hard. In the past twenty years the typical work week has expanded in duration by 20-25%. Meanwhile, wages have stagnated or declined (in real terms) while corporate profits have soared to record levels. Additionally, our country, which was founded in part on the principle of upward social mobility, has become more stratified and stagnant than many heavily socialized Western European nations. In other words, we are experiencing all of the detriments of neoliberal austerity without reaping any of its alleged benefits.

I always picture Joe Orr drinking with guys that have handlebar mustaches, and are dressed like they are going to a baseball game in 1933.

Whatever image of him I had in my head didn't fit the guy I met.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

You make an "oven" joke when a Jewish man is guest hosting a radio show and you don't even consider sticking him in the oven instead?
