Top international prospect Eloy Jimenez has decided to turn down more money from another club to sign with the Cubs, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez (on Twitter). Jimenez, a 16-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic, is regarded as the top international prospect in this year's July 2 class by both Baseball America and MLB.com. According to Sanchez, an announcement should come within the next few days.

Well that didn't take long

Quote:
The Dodgers have designated Carlos Marmol for assignment, according to Peter Gammons of the MLB Network (on Twitter). Gammons reports that the Dodgers were only interested in the international bonus slot they acquired in the deal, not in retaining Marmol as a member of their bullpen.

The Dodgers made what appeared to be a puzzling trade yesterday, dealing the recently DFA'ed Matt Guerrier to the Cubs in exchange for Marmol and an international bonus slot worth an additional $209,700. The Dodgers spent about $500K of actual money to acquire just under $210K of pool money, which makes sense, as international spending dollars carry more value than standard dollars because of bonus pool limitations.

In the end Marmol was property of the Dodgers for less than 24 hours. The 30-year-old, who posted a 5.86 ERA with 10.4 K/9, 6.8 BB/9 and 2.0 HR/9 in 27 2/3 innings this season, drew interest from multiple teams, so perhaps yet another club will inquire on his services.

Unless they keep him in AAA they look like clowns talking about how they have found a flaw and are going to fix it. Im sure theo and jed didn't give a shit about their true intentions of wanting the cap money. That is why they went and traded a 5'7 AA utility infielder for 800K of it yesterday.

All day the update guys on the Score have been talking as if this could be Garza's last start as a Cub as if it is a no brainer that the Cubs will soon trade him.

Has something changed? Have the Cubs said they were planning on trading him? He always seemed like a guy they were seriously thinking about keeping around.

Did I miss something?

This is probably so that numbers are not released. The Cubs are way over their international spending cap so they might be putting the brakes on this thing until they can grab some more cash or find a creative way to stay below 10 percent over the cap.

The Diamondbacks were kicking the tires on Shark but seemed to be uninterested in dealing their top prospects. With Garza's current worth being at its ceiling......I would love to see a blockbuster deal of Shark, Garza, Lake and Vitters to the diamondbacks for LHP Skaggs AAA, RHP Bradley AA and 3B Matt Davidson AAA.

That would be interesting. When I heard the Shark rumors, I thought Skaggs and Bradley, and you've got a deal. I think it was Heyman the next day that said the Cubs asked for Skaggs and Bradley and those discussions ended.

I'd still like to see Garza extended. Good pitching is nearly impossible to find. Let's hope they get one helluva haul given the dearth in the market right now. As to that DBack blockbuster, I don't know shit about those prospects so I have no clue, but giving up 2 starters still young for prospects is very very risky.

You could probably pencil in Davidson at 3b and Skaggs in the rotation the day they arrive. Bradley would be up sometime next season. He is dominating AA right now.

Perhaps the most interesting bit to come out on the Matt Garza trade front in recent days is a report out of Baltimore that, before settling on Scott Feldman, the Orioles were in on Garza. But those talks broke down, according to Eduardo Encina, because the Cubs asked for a package that included infield prospect Jonathan Schoop, and pitching prospect Eduardo Rodriguez. Those would be prospects three and four in the Orioles’ system (behind two guys that the Cubs aren’t getting, in Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman), and Schoop was a consensus top 100 prospect (in the 70 to 90 range) coming into the season. Rodriguez was probably just a touch out of the top 100. Schoop hasn’t put up great numbers this year, but we’re talking about a 21-year-old middle infielder who’s already reached AAA. Rodriguez tore up High-A, and has now reach AA at just 20-years-old. That’s the range of prospects you’d like to see the Cubs getting in a Garza deal (more about that tomorrow), and I am very encouraged to know that the Cubs are, at present, asking a very steep price for the top trade chip on the market. My guess is the Cubs were asking for more than Schoop and Rodriguez, too.

Ken Rosenthal says that the Texas Rangers remain interested in Matt Garza, just as they were at this time last year. Rosenthal’s sources tell him what we’d already long heard: the Cubs and Rangers were extremely close to making a trade for Garza – maybe even that night when his elbow injury flared up. The Rangers are likely to remain in the mix for Garza up until he’s moved, and although their system is no longer considered a top five or maybe even ten system, it’s still plenty deep to put together a quality package for Garza. Wouldn’t it be incredible if the two sides come together on a deal involving Garza, third base prospect Mike Olt and pitching prospect Martin Perez? That was the rumored deal last year, when Olt’s and Perez’s stocks were much, much higher than they are today (and Garza’s value was much higher). A part of me is wishing that that’s the precise deal that happens, not only because it’s an acceptable take for the Cubs, but because then I could pretend that whole elbow injury thing didn’t screw the Cubs at all.

The Nationals also have interest in Garza, per Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post. Kilgore describes that interest as “kicking the tires,” and that no formal offer has been made. That, to me, sounds like a, “hey, Theo and Jed, we’ve got some interest in Garza, but we don’t want to give up much … how much are you asking?” type of thing. That’s probably how many of these conversations start. With Dan Haren injured/ineffective and Ross Detwiler headed to the disabled list, the Nationals are probably as interested in picking up a pitcher as any team in baseball, especially when you consider how theoretically stacked their roster is, and how they are still somehow five games out of a playoff spot. As with the Rangers, there is plenty in the system that matches up well in a trade with the Cubs, so the Nats could become a very interesting trading partner.

I thought this could include international money as well, but I found this which changed my mind.

Working with the smallest pool of bonus money, as determined by Major League Baseball in accordance with a team’s 2012 record, the Nationals spent about $600,000 of their allotted $1.85 million on the seven players they secured on Tuesday, according to a source with knowledge of the agreements, and they plan to use their full allotment to secure more international talent.

It looks like Donnie Murphy will be called up to replace Hairston.

Sources are saying that Murphy was clearly pulled from the game after being hit by a pitch. Anything could happen now.

I would be intrigued at bringing in Jeff Francoeur though he is anti everything Theo wants in a player. There was a piece comparing him and Castro that I read last week. Both free swingers that had their approach fucked with by their teams. I didn't realize that Francoeur had a better first month than Puig has just had.

I just read where the A's are supposed to DFA Adam Rosales tomorrow. I would love to add him to the team. He is a chicago kid, cubs fan and an awesome guy.

I'd like to see Lake get a shot. And yes, they can launch Sappelt sooner rather than later.

#cubs project that Junior Lake, very good hitter (.315 at iowa) & good arm, will be their righty platoon OF next year.

Did Hairston sign for 2 years with the Cubs? Hopefully, they get a guy back with some chance to make a major league roster. I don't know what kind of right handed hitters the Cubs have to bring up,but hopefully it's soon.

Granted, these are 2 Cubs bloggers, but:

Hot Stove Cubbies ‏@HotStoveCubbies 33s
I 2nd that RT @CubsDen: IMO, the Cubs got a better pitching prospect for Hairston than any of the 3 guys the Marlins got for Nolasco.

And Heyman:

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 7m
given that hairston is at .172 (tho 8 HR all vs. lhp), pineyro plus nats paying vast majority of SH deal, not bad. #cubs
