I actually have done that once from Phoenix to Los Angeles to Phoenix and the other time from Chicago to Phoenix to Los Angeles through Vegas and Denver back to Chicago. It's definitely a cool trip, but you find out pretty quickly that in a lot of places there's a whole lot of nothing before you get to a city.

What some people do is take the summer off and visit every park in the major leagues over the summer.

I had a friend whose sister was dying of cancer and so they decided as a family to go skydiving. Cancer is one of those rare instances when people actually have an idea of when they might die, so it prioritizes the bucket list since there is an actual deadline.
