"You cant tell those young Latin hitters to take more pitches." Hawk regarding Castro...whom he claims he has only seen when the Cubs played the Sox, hasnt seen any Cub TV games. Lenny would be insulted, Len watches Hawk when he can. I would think you would watch your competition whenever you have a chance to? or Maybe those 2 games that you were 'sick' at Wrigley, you must have watched those games?

How about dem blacks and da asians?

Well, you know there is an old baseball saying in the Dominican: "You can't walk off the island."

Wouldn't he be referring to all Latins with that quote? Castro is just a reason to bring it up because he is Latin.

Melton has a similar thought that Cuban hitters will swing at anything.

I know one thing, some guys are free swingers and that's just how its gonna be

Still waiting on an example of a guy who developed patience

I'm not talking going from 35 BB to 45 BB

I'm saying a free swinger turned selective

Its rare but still it seems they always try

I don't think he ever walked 100 times in a season. But he didn't strike out much either. That shows how different baseball has become over the years. It used to be embarrassing to strike out 100 times. Now guys strike out 200 times and some people actually discuss whether they are potential Hall of Famers. As a big baseball fan and someone who is always going to watch no matter what the style of play, I think MLB may have a problem on its hands in the coming years. We've got a boring game right now. There are far too many strikeouts. And I don't mean Bob Gibson or Kerry Wood or Dwight Gooden or Felix Hernandez. That isn't boring. I'm talking about a guy like Quintana fanning 7 guys through six innings and then a cadre of bad relievers taking down another seven in the last three. That's bad baseball.

there's way too many backwards k's too. That's too much patience. Way more boring than a swinging K.

Disagree there.

But Im thinking of the Gibson/ Johnson / Gooden types

It depends on the pitcher.

They don't walk. Kind of like white NFL running backs. It's possible, but not likely.

That's what I mean. I don't think anyone dislikes a dominating performance by a great pitcher, but these teams are striking out because of ineptitude rather than any particulr specialness of most of the pitchers recording the Ks.

the increase in strikeouts tracks the increased use of sabremetrics. so players are striking out more b/c they are seeing more pitches, to try to up the OPS?

Note the big emphasis on OPS and its various incarnations (offensive WAR, etc.). Strikeouts are just another out in those. Makes for a less interesting game IMO, but that's the way it is. With advanced stats combined with PEDs the game will never be the same as it was in the 60s, 70s, 80s.

Selectivity is a good quality. I'm not sure going up there and purposely looking at pitches is selectivity. I'm of the opinion that you are going to get only one good chance each at bat MAYBE. If you get that chance, you should be swinging even if it is the first pitch. Selectivity is recognizing that good opportunity, not sitting back and waiting for a pitcher to make a mistake because of a count that is favorable to the batter.

I couldn't agree more. Nothing drives me crazier than seeing a hitter taking a first pitch fastball right down the middle or a get me over curveball. Work the count?? Fuck that. Get a good pitch and hit it hard somewhere. Hitting is hard enough without letting the pitcher get ahead in the count. This see a lot of pitches approach is what's leading to so many strikeouts and no hitters.
