So, the weakest/youngest characters in the beginning become players later on...because everyone else is already dead.
and 40 more pages about food...

Eh, gotta disagree...theon plot is garbage, scrap it. I like how they mentioned a Guy turning into a rat for killing a guest in his house ..expecting a good revenge scene for Walter Frey.

You know nothing 312 Snow. It is all leading to something. Its all interconnected - granted this seems a bit early but they had to keep the Greyjoys on screen in some fashion with all the Stark/Lannister plot going on. They haven't even brought in the Dornish yet. The Red Viper is going to be an instant favorite. That rat story is a good one to remember - hang on to that.

i love when the red viper goes inigo montoya on the mountain's ass.

i have yet to watch the finale but i think it needed to be a slow episode after the red wedding. next season will be packed with more stuff. it's the 5th and 6th seasons where i think they may lose some audiences.

Interesting. I am about halfway through a reread that has taken me 4 months because I look at it and just don't want to keep reading. The way he ended that book was just complete garbage. You are telling me Mereen was better the second time through??? I can't believe that.

Yes it was better because I wasnt reading it thinking it was leading to a thrilling conclusion. I was just reading it for what it was. Not great but OK.

Storm
GoT
Kings
Dance
Feast

i don't know how "feast" can be considered worse than "dance". at least "feast" isn't unending circles. it's set up, but with the promise of a payoff at some point. "dance" was supposed to be that payoff. in the meantime there are some really amusing fights between cersei and margaery, great stuff between jamie and brienne...and it seemed like for once martin was having some fun with his story.

"dance" felt like an assignment...

I'll agree it didn't live up to expectations. Reading it devoid of those expectations it is a better book than Feast.

But Feast at least had resolution to some of the meandering stories. The cliffhangers made sense. Martin admitted there are two big battle scenes omitted from Dance and that's why it feels like such a letdown. It ended in such a mess of loose ends you just feel cheated. And I'll never forgive Mereen. NEVER HANK!!!

We'll agree to disagree about Dance and Feast.

Dance at least has Tyrion and Jon Snow.

I think the writing in Dance is on par with Storm... for 80% of the book. The Reek chapters are some of the best storytelling I have ever read. They are tremendous. And Jon and Tyrion chapters are always great. But until I read the first 150 pages of Winds of Winter and find out what happened, its an incomplete book in my mind.

i look at the construction of the two books, because really...they should've been the same book. and maybe then it would've been a pretty great read...just maybe a bit condensed or abridged (like mereen?) version would've been perfect.

however, the construction of "feast" is some of the best pace he's got in the series. "dance" gets so bogged down so many times that it's hard to remember how good some of it is. i just remember breezing through "feast", and i realize that i had "dance" waiting in the wings rather than having like a decade to wait to read it.

still, "dance" is constructed poorly as a novel. it reads like a second draft, like it didn't get to a final edit.

i'm holding out hope that "winds of winter" will pay off. praying...to the old gods and new.

A book that doesnt include your 3 biggest and arguably most popular characters is bad for business. People are upset about the ending of Dance and that is understandable. I didnt like it either but not because it is a cliffhanger but rather because of the directions everything is heading in.

Finally got through the last book a few weeks back. I'm just exhausted from his writing. I wanted the last 100 pages of Dragons to just be done.

Sweet.

I read halfway through the last book and lost interest. Also, there's so much that I have pretty much forgotten everything other than a couple huge plot points so it's like I'm going in new.

The trailer titillated me:

The Red Viper

Jamie getting the golden hand and his Valyrian sword.

A preview of a certain fight that I've been waiting to see depicted since the show started.

The show looks to be into Dance material already. We got a shot of Theon dressed in armor probably going to get the surrender of Moat Caillin and one of Bran and Hodor at a weirwood tree north of the Wall. Maybe this spur the Gurm to finish Winds.
