While I really enjoy the album, I wouldn't be surprised if Rick Rubin just ruined Jay Z's momentum.

It seemed like it was personal. Every critic that didn't like Jay-Z's album seemed like they had an axe to grind. You can admire Kanye for taking a risk and knock Jay-z for playing it relatively safe but that doesn't make Kanye's better. His album is really weird all around. Lyrically he even took a couple steps back.

Weariness with "art" that consists only of glorifying commerce and one's relationship to commerce isn't an ax to grind. The aforementioned isn't art, either.

Reading many of the reviews that's what I came away with. I think it is lazy to say it was just glorifying his wealth. It was much more than that.

Talented, even Awesome at times, but mostly makes the stuff the people buy rather than stuff the critics love

Oh and makes all his friends rich

I know we all want to hear something "fresh" and that's why we love the Kendrick Lamar's of the world but if you were in his position would you take the risk? Personally I would at this point in his career. People will still buy it. Is it a case of him being in a bubble for so long that he's clueless? Does he need a fresh pair of ears or 2 around him. Call Rick Rubin and ask him to do the whole album and bring Puffy in?

I think you can take a chance every other record and keep the fan base

U2 did that. They changed twice. One worked, one didnt, but they stayed huge.
