This.

The B and B version of WYC is to the HFC version of who you crapping as Epcot Center's world showcase is to Europe.

It's an embarrassment for it to be called by the same name.

Gary in Evanston being a top crapper is endemic of the problem with the B and B version of this bit. He really should not be applauded.

You got all of that one.

I'm sure he was fine as a person but the guy produced bad content. Let his friends and family mourn him not some guys on a radio show he made less good.

I soooo wish that there was a Dan Bernstein wannabe on another station in town....to mock HIM.

WannabeDB: What is going on here? Who's asking the questions? An otherwise healthy 59 year-old does. not. die. of. natural. causes. in. his. sleep. Furthermore, let his close family and friend mourn, we are doing important BIG. BOY. RADIO.

Other than calling in every week for a decade, I honestly don't get the gushing. Then again, these are the same guys who mock 99% of their callers....leaving the other 1% full of Garys, TenFootTards, MadduxBoys, Schmutzies, great emailers like Rudy, and addled old men in nursing homes.

I haven't really listened to this show in about three-and-a-half months, so I don't know if something had happened in that time, but the Gary hagiography has grown rather creepy from hosts and listeners alike. Check the facebook group. Lines like "When he called every week, you really felt like you knew him" strike me as particularly odd. Over the course of almost 300 Gary calls, I don't think I did. I knew there was some guy who resided in Evanston, grew up an Expos fan, watched westerns, and subjected himself to too much Skip Bayless and Michael Wilbon. So I was aware of him, but I didn't know what he did for a living, if he had family, why he liked the Expos (erstwhile Jewish Montrealer exiled by Loi 101?), or what he did in his free time other than feeling compelled to watch so much bad ESPN. After the fact, we learned a little more about him, some of which, like the Aspergian third-shift meticulous proofreading, makes him an interesting and almost sympathetic figure, but again, that's after the fact.

Then you have Dan getting over-defensive on Twitter, going all "don't tell us how to grieve! He wouldn't have wanted it any other way! We only mock the ones we love!", except what did they even do that could be considered out-of-bounds grieving, anyway? What's going on?

I was a bit disappointed that I didn't see Gary @ the NWU old baseball films annual thing, as JORR mentioned a few times over the last two years that Gary was gonna be there. I guess I never got a chance to see the legend.

But yeah, even tho the HFC WYC stuff is only a fragmented memory from my childhood, I remember it being more vitriolic than what it's become, which is a Who's Who of the "good ones" who call in to extol the bernsteinian paradigms of sports talk radio.... I can remember when I was ~21 and working a data entry deskjob with my radio right there that thursdays at 5 were a highlight, but now that it's gone on to become "The Station's Flagship Segment" and everything is overtly political (not in terms of actual politics, but the politics of getting the bernstein seal of approval, you know, it's like when Bernstein notices Alford on twitter and fires the first servo talking shit to him hoping to get blocked; low and behold @Schmutzie_ and maddux boy are firing ~10 nasty tweets at alford in the span of an hour) --- meh. it's just emblematic of everything that's changed with the show over the years, how that little underdog outpost from a day chock full of "meatballism" has become the de facto /standard for what's expected at the station, and WYC has evolved to reflect the changing in the guard of how everyone regards the bernstein way of radio.

Since Gary from Evanston was one of the first ~2-3 craps every week for however long, that shows that he was definitely "in the club" and nowadays in contemporary media, given the ubiquitous sea of omnipresent (digital) mediocrity that twitter, facebook, and youtube have given us.... .all you have to do is be there on an "official" media outlet long enough and you're loved simply by being there, as is evidenced by everyone here having the attitude of "yeah it sucks that he died, but wtf, it wasn't like he was any good at crapping" --- which is true, but nowadays you celebrate anyone who's simply there as "making it" when everyone technically has a voice in the echo chamber and therefore 99.9% of everyone is drowned out in the echos. it's kind of like how jimmy fallon is considered a key cog of the late night talk show machine when, really, he's just kind of there and isn't entirely memorable on his own merits. yet we're told to regard him as a "big deal" simply because he's there.

Only dan bernstein is qualified to tell others how to grieve. Fuck your prayers and tributes. Send money!

The best part about Gary was the dumbass fact he would say followed by the "Who cares?" sound drop. Gary sucked but is better than half of the crappers but all they do is kiss Bernsteins ass. I can't listen to it anymore

people forgot long ago that is an "act of verbal hypocrisy." the segment is a shell of it's former self. Like an 88 mph "fastball" and not the 99 mph it once was.
