once again, sorry to tell you, I agree with Bernstein - I like watching great athletes be great. I like competition, I like great plays. That interests me more than "my team", actually, though I won't deny I'd like for "my team" to do well.

We'll never agree on this point. I hate this thought. The shift towards celebrating individuals over someone's team seems to be the "in" thing. I blame stupid fantasty sports and NBA. Whatever.
Agree 100%. It's one of the dumbest modern sports thoughts made by people that want to sound like a higher level fan. I never played a game where I said "Wasn't it awesome to see another player dominate my team. He made great plays. It was so great that my team lost by 30 points". You want your guys to win and you want the other guys to lose.

Sports are not performance art. If you are actively rooting for another team to win then you are doing it wrong.

Oh, it's also something those who have an inferiority complex about college sports say just like "I watch to scout for the draft" and "The fans care too much".

I have a similar feeling about bowling. Guys used to make physical adjustments whereas now they largely stand in the same spot and use the same motion while allowing a large rack of differently constructed balls to do all the work. I think bowling would be eminently more interesting- though lower scoring- if competitors were forced to use a single ball per tournament.

I know guys that have multiple lockers at the bowling alley to house their arsenal. I throw one ball for everything. Strike shots, and all spares, even the ten pin. I move my feet, and my line, as the oil pattern dictates.

Agree with all. If you just watch for individual athletes, let's just make the NBA the And 1 Tour. Why even have a team strategy at all? Let's just create the conditions for spectacular individual plays.

Sports is SUPPOSED to be somewhat tribalistic. That's the point.

I agree with bogey on almost nothing, not even the minor assertions. This should be the beginning of a beautiful relationship

exactly, you watch porn to see if Ron Jeremy can bring her to orgasm, cuz while you can give me newfangled stats like VORC (value over replacement cock) or P-WAR, still, in the end you can only fuck the vagina that's spread eagle in front of you and it doesn't matter how long you last compared to other pornstars, nor does it matter the level of consistent force you apply to said vagina, it only matters if you bring to her orgasm and thus win the game.

if that vagina only had 6 minutes of pounding required for an orgasm, you can't fault a guy for doing what it takes to win, even tho you wanna try and use these new metrics to say that some dude who lasts on average of 42 minutes when the OAVIP (orgasm average of vaginas in play) is somewhere around ~30-35 minutes is superior to the guy who achieved orgasm in 6 minutes? BULLSHIT! again, you can only fuck the vagina in front of you because the only pertinent question to ask is HOW. DOES. THIS. GET. YOU. CLOSER. TO. AN. ORGASM?!!?!?!

haha

well no.. I never said I don't get excited. I think if especially if you have a rooting interest in a team, however slight. you will get excited.

or.. if it's just a very exciting game.

I should have focused on LEVEL of excitement and DURATION of said excitement.

my level probably isn't as high as most people's and most certainly its duration doesn't even come close.

I guess I'm just a quick sports orgasm kind of guy. I'm over victory or disappointment within about a half hour after the conclusion of a game.

When watching something for greatness or artistry, etc. it's a different kind of input

btw in Dan's defense.. didn't "Bernstine" say (on many occasions) that in front of his TV at home he becomes a a complete meatball??

If you think celebrations/parades are ridiculous, its a 90 degree slope towards "Why even watch other people playing a game?"

This is all very silly.

No I believe that he said that from an early age he was watching games better than us, with his focus on the lines and always away from the ball.

Well, I think it's part of the philosophy that sports shouldn't be watched as a "tribal" pursuit but rather as an appreciation of the physical achievements of one's fellow human beings and marveling at what the human body (not yours) is actually capable of. Something like the Olympic ideal of "Higher, Faster, Stronger", which we all know is an absolute crock of shit as rather than admiring the feats of those athletes from other nations, each country began drugging its own athletes in a cynical attempt to outdo them. The most base kind of tribalism.

It's really the same way of watching sports that leads to being impressed by a 0.96 WHIP with a 5-8 record. Ignoring the context. Not much different than denigrating a center who shoots 68% as "just big" and a three-point shooter who cans 40% from outside the arc as "a white driveway shooter" while cheering an inefficient guy who flies through the air and sticks his nuts in someone's face. "The NBA is great because your own teammates sit on the bench guffawing like hyenas when that happens!"
