dan's views are goofy. You would think he would have learned from his statement that "Juan Uribe will never start for a World Series team". He's done it twice now and may get another one if Kershaw and the boys keep pitching the way they have. He just spouts whatever he reads in Baseball America or on Fangraphs. He has no idea which current White Sox will be on a championship team. He should shut up.

may get another one of what then?

Another World Series championship.

Unless you're talking about marijuana I'm gonna have to disagree with that.

Well, you'd be wrong. You absolutely cannot play NFL football (unless you are a kicker- maybe) without being gassed up on something. And the NBA isn't far behind. Rodman touches on it in his latest Sports Illustrated interview. And look, I'm not judging. I'm pretty much a guy who doesn't give a shit what they take. But let's not act as if only baseball players are trying to do whatever they can to stay in the league and get the huge contracts. It's everywhere.

Yeah but even meathead white guys from the south should know better than to use PEDs than, well...you know...

I agree it's probably a problem everywhere. What is your basis for thinking PED use is more rampant in the NBA than MLB?

I just think it's more likely to yield obvious results in a sport like basketball. If a guy can't hit, there isn't a drug that can make him hit. The physical aspects of baseball are different. It kind of gets into what we call "athleticism". I think most people would say Michael Jordan was more "athletic" than Pete Rose. But clearly there is a level of coordination Rose had that Jordan lacked that is evidenced by their respective abilities at hitting a baseball. Anyway, I don't think there is any drug that can make Jordan hit better, but there are certainly drugs that can help him take a beating from the Detroit bad boys. And give one back.

I don't believe most people care about what some douchebag puts in his body. The problem society has is that when one guy does it, it creates an imperative for others to follow. For example, if I push Scottie Pippen around all season, I get paid a certain amount. What do I do when he comes back the next year looking like a cover boy for Muscle & Fitness? Now I've got a choice to make. And those choices quickly trickle down to high school kids who hope to play in the NBA one day.

I'm sure Tim Grover knows as much about performance enhancing drugs as anyone.

Scottie and Horace absolutely transformed their bodies after their rookie years.

Not immediately. It was moreso around their 3rd, maybe 4th seasons in the league. 1992 or thereabouts.

Remember the post HIV Magic Johnson? Final Jordan incarnation? They looked like they were inflated to 60 PSI.

Mahorn, Kevin Willis, Marjele, the NBA has been juiced since at least the late 80s.

No, those two were just fat and out of shape after being out of the league for multiple years.

Nothing. He was raking a caller by demanding WHO ON THIS WHITE SOX ROSTER WILL BE AROUND WHEN THEY ARE GOOD AGAIN??????? I have no idea. Neither did the caller. And neither does dan. And I guarantee if Kris Bryant comes up and plays like Conor Gillaspie has this year, there will be a completely different spin. He won't be saying Bryant is "no good".

I wish that caller yesterday reminded Dan that Gillaspie was a first round pick who progressed through the minors but was blocked from a full time job at the MLB level. I'm not sure they have anything in him but its not like he doesn't have some pedigree that indicates he could handle the job.

Earl Cunningham was a first round pick. Who cares? Gillaspie's minor league track record is less impressive than Brent Morel's.

I am hereby the first person in Chicago to challenge the "Theo is a really smart guy" theory.

He got into Yale because of his father's contacts as a chair at Boston U. He went to a middling law school. He had no advanced education in business or mathematics but merely was provided analysis by a staff numbers cruncher in Boston. He did not even hire that person as Bill James was already consulting the Red Sox before he was a GM.

I really have to go no further than the Yale analysis as that is 75% of the presumption that he is really smart. Some people simply roll over at the mention of an Ivy League school.

I think he is smart enough. I also really like the guy as a person. I just don't think he is some advanced intelligence that is three steps ahead of others. This is not Cub bashing. I am simply challenging a prevailing opinion on the Chicago baseball scene.

Good points. My theoskepticism was always based on the fact that baseball closed the loopholes that made him succeed in Boston, but this is good, too.

If the NBA has a bigger PED problem than MLB than NBA players are unequivocally smarter than baseball players. That much can't really be disputed.

I'd say there are a couple things at work. The NBA hasn't taken any heat over the issue. Thus, management doesn't care. Just like MLB management didn't care when revenue was growing by leaps and bounds and chicks were digging the longball. It only became an issue when Canseco started talking. And at first there was a rush to paint him as a lunatic. Well, maybe he is a lunatic, but he wasn't lying about steroids. Just like Rodman isn't lying about them now.

Bottom line: people don't care if LeBron is sauced to the gills the way they resent Ryan Braun for being juiced. bernstein has a problem with baseball but you never hear him complaining about a juiced up Payton following a juiced up Thayer and Hilgy into the endzone.

I don't have a problem with anyone taking anything they want to take, in sports and society. It just seems to me that it's impossible to compare the PED usage across the sports without it being based 100% on speculation. We KNOW that dozens and dozens of MLB players were caught taking steroids. We KNOW that Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis(two of the softest NBA players of my lifetime, and Hedo eats pizza before every NBA game) were taking steroids and forget about proof; we don't even have any evidence that anyone else in the NBA is taking them. Both leagues test for the same steroids/HGH

I'm not sure that's true. Anyway, I'm not trying to suggest any particular number of players does or doesn't. I'm just suggesting that it defies logic to believe that only baseball is full of guys who will go to great lengths to enhance their chances of continuing a lucrative career.

Oh, I agree with that. I pretty much assume every professional athlete is on something, legality be damned. I just didn't agree with the idea that other leagues had a worse problem than MLB. I also don't know if I buy your argument about it helping more in other sports. Anecdotal evidence of Jordan sucking at baseball is apropos of nothing, IMO. Steroids won't help you hit a baseball, but they might help you hit a home run. They won't help you hit a jump shot, but they might make it possible for a mere mortal to guard Shaq for 35 minutes a night. They have their uses in every sport.

In sports, the steroid "outrage" is just about the most hypocritical thing I've seen. If taking steroids was the difference between making $10 million a year or selling life insurance for $40K, every single person here would take them. Whoever says otherwise is either a liar or a moron.

Before WCW closed down and I was 20 years old, I was saving up to go train at the Power Plant to become a wrestler. I had already started taking creatine. I would have had no problem taking the heavy stuff and becoming a mutant.

Would've? Hell, I'm still relatively young. I'm about to pick up a 12 week cycle. The dream isn't dead yet!
