Actually both the Cubs and Nationals are getting a PTBNL in the Hairston deal.

If they could sign him for what they were supposedly willing to pay Anibal Sanchez, that would be fine by me.

If I were him, I would go with Florentino, not Ivan.

Did Hairston sign for 2 years with the Cubs? Hopefully, they get a guy back with some chance to make a major league roster. I don't know what kind of right handed hitters the Cubs have to bring up,but hopefully it's soon.

Getting anything of note for a guy hitting .172 with a .232 OBA has to be considered a good move.

The Cubs picked up Cole Gillespie who shockingly isn't related to Connor Gillespie. He hasn't reported to the team yet though.....reason being.....There is a good chance Nasty Nate gets dealt over the all-star break and this is his replacement.

Not shockingly as their surnames aren't even spelled the same.

Totally irrelevant information. :D

Henry Rodriguez has been designated for assignment. This clears room for Cole to join the team.

Cuban pitching phenom Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez has been cleared by the US Government to play. Cubs supposedly players for his services. Expected to command upwards of $60M.

But who is automatically better than Conor just by virtue of the Cubs picking him up.

Left-hander Travis Wood has been with the Cubs for just over 18 months after being acquired in a rare intra-division trade that saw the Reds send Wood, Dave Sappelt and Ronald Torreyes to Chicago in exchange for setup ace Sean Marshall. However, as Wood explained to Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com, he'd like to be wearing a Cubs uniform significantly longer. Wood told Hayes that he hopes to be considered a core component and receive an extension similar to the ones signed by Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro in the past year:

“Theo and Jed and them are moving in the right direction,” Wood said. “We’ve got a great group of guys there, and everybody plays hard and as of late we’ve played solid ball. ... I’d love to be a part of the core group and stay around Chicago for a while, but that’s out of my hands.”

The 26-year-old Wood has enjoyed a breakout campaign with the Cubs thus far in 2013, pitching to a 2.79 ERA with 6.3 K/9, 2.8 BB/9 and a 33.7 percent ground-ball rate. Advanced metrics like FIP (3.59), xFIP (4.40) and SIERA (4.45) all suggest that Wood's ERA should be higher than its current mark. His former teammate Joey Votto offered high praise for Wood within Hayes' piece, stating that he always thought highly of the left-hander and that he feels it's unfortunate Wood didn't enjoy this level of success in Cincinnati.

Bowden hears there's an 80 percent chance that Matt Garza will be traded before his next scheduled start (Monday or Tuesday of next week). The Rangers, Red Sox and Diamondbacks are still involved, He describes the D-backs as "dark horses," adding that their odds in the Garza sweepstakes would increase if they were willing to part with left-hander David Holmberg.
The Rockies could also be interested in Garza, but they're not clear-cut buyers right now, and the prospective cost is prohibitive to them. If they were to sell, Rafael Betancourt and Matt Belisle could be had. Michael Cuddyer could be moved, but only if Colorado is "blown away."

Do the Cubs go and commit 50-60 mil to this Miguel Gonzalez cat from Cuba? He is supposedly mlb ready after knocking the dust off. I'm intrigued. With no high end pitching talent in the farm system that is anywhere near the bigs this could be a great way to acquire some without having to trade or draft or even develop.

If you were willing to commit that money to an unknown, why not just give that to Garza?

3 years younger, higher ceiling. And if you're Theo, I think you'd rather deal Garza, get the prospects and then sign this kid. That's better than just Garza. Plus, maybe then re-sign Garza in the off-season?

Sounds like the Dodgers will scoop this kid up, anyway though.

He's 3 years younger in Cuban years which means they're the same age in US years.

The ability of the Cubans seem to be wildly fantasized by evaluators.

Was really hoping for a deal today:

Buster OlneyBuster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 28s
Other teams say CHC are asking for last and best offers on Matt Garza, and they think he'll be traded before he throws another pitch for CHC

Has there been any talk on who the Cubs maybe able to get in return?

I have a feeling they might add Soriano to the mix.

Literally everyone in Texas has been named at some point, even including Profar (which isn't happening), and Neftali Perez. Olt, Luke Jackson, Martin Perez.

Red Sox, Cardinals, Jays, Dbacks, Pirates, Dodgers other teams listed as interested. But with all the conflicting info, it's hard to know who has been serious. You'll see the Cardinals interested, and then 2 hours later read they would never trade an impact prospect in division. The only constant, has been the Rangers and Red Sox being the 2 favorites, in that order.

What I've seen printed a few places, is the expectation is a top 100 prospect, a major league player (arm), and another low prospect. That changes if one of the OF, or Russell/Gregg is also in the deal, of course.

That said, I also read a lot about people saying the Cubs asking price is way too high.

The Cubs just drafted a 3B, which could complicate a trade with the Rangers because Olt is also a 3B. Both could be moved to the OF. Olt is supposedly a plus defender with a high strikeout rate.

I think the Cubs would take Olt and Luke Jackson from the Rangers even though Olt is looking like the second coming of Brett (Mike Trout) Jackson. They may leverage that to get a better pitching prospect thrown in, as well.

If they traded to the Blue Jays, they would get all pitching back. They still have promising pitching in the minors even after gutting their system this winter in that deal with the Marlins.

If they traded with the Red Sox, I would like to see them get Cecchini and a pitcher. Cecchini is also a 3B, though, but man can that fucker hit.

I don't see any of those other teams mentioned paying up for Garza. I'm sure the biggest thing for the Cubs is getting a pitching prospect with top of the rotation ability back in the deal. They already have pretty good position prospects in the minors.

I would expect them to make the trade with the Rangers because I think the Rangers will be dumb enough to overpay. If they do take Olt back, I wouldn't be too surprised to see them try to flip him to another team.

No way the Cubs are at all concerned about Olt and Bryant both playing 3B. That stuff sorts itself out. Remember, not all these prospects are going to be here... some will be used for trades.

I like that package from the Red Sox. Cecchini is getting a lot of praise.
