Indeed.

The board will never be the same.

This is somewhat true but kids dont really give a shit in the grand scheme of things. When my son goes to the park he talks to any little kid there, black/white/asian/hispanic. He could care less as long as they will play with him. There isnt a problem until you get a jagoff parent saying stuff or influencing their thoughts.

But not just a parent. It's the environment as a whole. And it's difficult to hide from that in the United States.

My parents got divorced when I was ten years old. At the time it was horrible. We lived in Sauganash Park. Everyone I knew was "just like me"- white, Catholic, two parents who were still married to each other, disliked blacks and J-ews, or at least didn't want them around. The deed to our house has a restrictive covenant forbidding the sale of the property to J-ews. It didn't say anything about blacks, probably because no one would have been so bold to sell to the colored or perhaps based on the assumption that none of them could afford to live there anyway. My parents' divorce scandalized the neighborhood.

That divorce was the best thing that ever happened to me as a man. My mom moved us to Evanston where I went to school with a class that was about 45% black. Most of the white kids were Jewish. For some of those years my best friend was literally black. (Big shoutout to Scott Davis. We had two kids named Scott Davis in the class. The other one was Jewish. I never really cared for him that much. ) Anyway, I quickly learned how dumb the prejudices I had acquired in Sauganash were.

When I went to high school at Gordon it was like traveling to my past. The black guys I went to high school with were viewed by the white students, the teachers, the preists, brothers, and coaches the way bernstein views black people- as objects who existed only to win football and basketball games.

Saugansh Park...always trying to bootstrap on to Sauganash for upward mobility.

But seriously, the Saugansh Park I have always known is almost 100% orthodox jewish. I think you are overstating the state of things.

Backing up your point, I didn't experience any kind of racial disharmony until I gained friends from Rogers Park but I agree there is a certain harmony to the whole neighborhood that I have always liked. This is why I have never really thought of North as racist. He says ignorant racial things but that is common where he lived. I also think he lived, worked and socialized perfectly well

 I made sure to use "Park" in explaining where I was from just for you. I'm not a big shot like dolphin. No rubbing elbows with Bill and Bernie for me. I know my place.

I can't really speak to what it's like now, but when I was growing up there were no J-ews, Orthodox or otherwise, in Sauganash Park. If you crossed Pulaski heading east, Solomon School had its share of Jewish kids. You had to get past Kedzie before you began seeing the black hats.

A complete overhaul of the prison system has to occur too. Paying all this money for a place that seems to exist only to make sure everyone goes right back in when they get out is idiotic, plus the obvious human rights violations.

I'm having a hard time understanding this? What are the cultural differences that are too difficult to overcome? What does comfort mean? Keep in mind I am not suggesting we force adults to do anything. I am saying that exposing kids to people who don't look like them at a young age is helpful.

A culture has to do with language, religion, music, fashion, values, social norms, gender roles, etc. People can and do accept differences but how much it is intertwined with their life is at their comfort level. Cultures vary...work, school, neighborhood, status. Sometimes you conform, sometimes it's not worth it.

You conformed at your old job. If you'd have substitued my husband in your work story it probably would have been the same. He'd have gotten looks. When I first started woking it was with mostly white men. I wore dark colors or grey and mostly suits. When I did not I got looks and was treated differently. The next place I worked was with mostly black women. One of them asked me after a few months why I dressed like an old white man. I realized I didn't fit in so I had to add more feminine pieces and color. I think I was accepted there, probably better than with the men. But both noticed when I stepped outside the fashion culture of that group. I also am treated differently if I'm fat or thin, dressed up or look like a slob. I'm convinced there are mom friends I'm not close with because of how I used to dress. I'm closer with them now that I have done some updating.

I have family and friends I don't agree with culturally but I love and accept them, I don't know that I would if they weren't family and friends. I'd think they were weirdos like I think their friends are weirdos. It's judgemental, but not full of hatred. I don't involve myself nor do I really care.

Exposing kids to people that aren't like them is a good idea but I'd suspect ultimately they will start sticking with what is like them at some point.

The family structure in most communities have been dead for decades. That's why I believe you have to go around them.
I think that is the biggest problem and you can't go around it. Out of the 15 or so women I worked with I think 1 was still married and maybe only 3 dads were involved in the kids' lives. I don't know that you can have success without that.

JORR hits on the economic status. That I think is the biggest cultural influence, because typically you have most of the same values or lead similiar lives. Most look the same and have the same and the other differences aren't as influential.
