the TDI option is excellent

No. Was about to buy a Passat based on looks and gas mileage. Test drove it and hated it.. When you take your foot off the accelerator, the car dives forward. The sales guy warned me about that beforehand. I guess it's because of the high torque in diesels.

Too bad, because the car looks great.

I drive 66 miles per day so the gas Passat isn't ideal for me.

That is the DSG transmission..and how it engages. You adapt to it...same as you would with a clutch on a full blooded manual.

I've driven a manual transmission for the last 7 years - I know how a car with and without a manual transmission should feel when you take your foot off the pedal.

Bottom line to me was, I did not like the fact that when I took my foot off the accelerator, it felt like i was hitting the breaks at the same time..

I really wish it was different because I would have bought the car that day

edit: Were you driving the Passat in S rather than D? The engine braking is immensely more noticeable in S....since youre at no lower than 3500 or 4000 RPM ever.

This is my only nitpick on the Passat. When in S and braking the downshift from 2nd to 1st is jarring. I thought I broke something the first time it happened  You get used to it. Such a minor thing too really. I don't have the diesel engine, just the gasoline engine.

That would be what I like about it if a otherwise normal car has that German sport feel.

A DSG is neither a manual nor an automatic. My buddy has a 5spd Evo GSR...he tracks it...knows how to drive a manual in and out...he drove my car once and it took him awhile to get it right. Shifts can be very jarring from N-1, 1-2, and 2-3 as the clutches grab their gears.

When you let go of the accelerator, the DSG is still in gear. It doesn't simulate neutral like an automatic would.'And it will downshift from 6 to 4 to 3 to 2 as you brake, even in D. Many aren't used to that feel unless they're controlling each downshift.

I drive my DSG with the stick in all but the very worst of stop-go traffic. <200ms torque to torque shifts are amazing, and worth the minor shudders at lower gears while the 2 clutches do their thing.

The car was in D

Not sure why they put a transmission like that in a semi-luxury car. I can understand putting something a little more sporty in the Jetta, but they should have an option for something a little smoother in the Passat

Also, don't ever call a Jetta sporty.

I didn't. I said "sporty transmission"

I don't like the way the car drives. Period.

My wife has a 2010 Maxima and the car drives like a dream compared to the Passat. While I knew the power of the Diesel Passat wouldn't compare to her Maxima, I was looking for an equal, if not smoother, ride.

Just my opinion. I wanted to love the car.. I really did..

Cadenza, and be done with it.

Looking for something with better MPG. Good looking car, though.

Lexus CTF?
ES Hybrid?

You're in a weird position...it seems you want mid-size...and a taste of luxury...and good gas mileage. You'll need a F/I I4 or a hybrid. Kia Optima / Hyundai Sonata? Those are a bit smaller...but the mpg is respectable. Same with the VW CC 2.0T.

Couple year old BMW 328i or MB E250? Audi A4?

My budget is around 35K and want to buy new. I REALLY want an A4, but that's pushing it - especially since the gas mileage isn't there.

The ES Hybrid has peeked my interest, but a little over budget.

This is why the Passat is perfect. I feel it has a touch luxury and class..
