Listen to the studio version of that dreck "I Want You to Want Me". Tell me I'm wrong.

They're the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

If they were having a concert in my backyard, I wouldn't just draw my curtains, I'd draw my gun to my head.

Could you book them for a concert in my backyard?

The live version is the canonical one, and "Surrender" in any form is a masterpiece.

No I can't because you can barely see him for the first 30 seconds. But after that, I'd say he kind of had a Ronnie James Dio thing going on. I'm also relatively sure he was coked up beyond belief.

It was awesome.

I am going to the garage to think about it.

The mere fact that you referenced the studio version is proof enough of just how wrong you are.

The live version is simply amazing - they sped up the tempo and dumped the country vibe (including the rollicking piano throughout) on Budokan. Even the drum intro is sensational - genius in its simplicity and progression.

Look, Cheap Trick is a one-trick pony .... every band .... EVERY band has a niche of followers no matter how awful, but there's a reason that even before the 90s came around they were playing state fairs on a good night. Their shit gets play on 95.9 because suburban schlubs remember drinking Mad Dog or Boones Farm and then hope they're gonna get frisky with the spouse later on, hoping it lasts longer than the 3 minutes and change that dreck lingers on for.

PLUS the song is so shallow and pedantic they start the damn song with the chorus .... I mean, who does that?

Image

please keep in mind most of this is to get your Irish up .... but the song really is a slog to suffer through ....

Countless musicians that fall outside of your stereotype cite them as a huge influence. Multiple -night shows in urban areas where they played complete albums, not appealing to the greatest hits crowd. Mike Damone got it, why don't you? ;)

They still put on a great live show and their last two albums are really solid.

Who starts a song with a chorus? An artist. An innovator. That criticism makes as much sense as
dumping on a Peter Gabriel album because it's drums only, no cymbals.

It's rock, there are no rules.

Edit: bastard! I just noticed your last line...

Neil Diamond is what Chet Coppock would be if he went into music instead of radio.
