At that point the waitress should have went to her manager, who would then be the one to confront the table.

Sounds like Greg's friends said 'You know how drunk Greg is tonight? I think he is drunk enough to leave the entire tip for the table. Let's get the waitress in on this'

And then they all laughed at you....

Did a manager notice any of this and see what was going on at any point, or was it all just her and you guys?

I noticed she said something to her manager after she asked us if anything was wrong. I was expecting the manager to come over, since at that point, I still did not know why she inquired about the service.

Ive reconsidered. All she did was ask.

Although Id be more tolerant of it if she was stiffed

Greg could have said "You were tipped, so I guess not"

This must have been the first bad tip she ever received in her life, as that would be the only conceivable reason why she would feel the need to call you out on it.

Having the manager do it would work too. But I still wouldn't call it a confrontation. It's asking for feedback. 9% inherently means you did something incorrect. You, as the waiter, should find out what it was,

Because I let her pay for dinner? That's why I should turn in my man card?

Maybe they were all European and spoke flawless English.

She got a tip, she should keep her trap shut.

I don't think we ever would have found out about the 9% flub had the manager come over with the "Was everything okay tonight?" That's entirely common for a manager to follow up after meals.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. Separate checks, so if I was in that situation and I covered my bill and tipped ~20% on that, I wouldn't have thrown in more money. You can't make people tip. As shitty as that is, as Dan said such is the life of a server. I'm really not sure what I would say or how I would react in that situation because honestly up until now, its never even occurred to me that it might happen.

Yeah, I kind of agree with this. The math doesn't work in this story. If greg did his part in a party of 7, at least 2 of the other 3 pairs would have had to stiff her.

They should have stepped up and said something about not tipping (for whatever reasons). Greg shouldn't have to cover for them, too. Although, I guess I probably would have as not to cause a scene with my friends.

The other explanation is that some people in your party assumed 18% was included.

It's totally inappropriate for a server to embarrass a guest with that kind of question. When someone tips 30% does she chase them down and ask, "Did I really do that great of a job or do you just like my ass?"

1. Your friends should be paying for you and your GF, without seperate checks, what are you 16 year old girls???

2. 6 or more is a standard for auto tipping in many places.

3. I dont know what the waitress/waiter min wage is these days, but it is like 1/2 of the reg min wage due to the tips being part of their basic wage. If they fucked up with the service, yes you can adjust the tip accordingly, but you said she didnt.

4. She is a waitress, not a mediator, so to even put her in the position of having to basically ask you to pay more tip money is a no win for her, so your friends GF should STFU and be ashamed for fucking up.

5. You have the right to tip like shit and you have the right to tip excessively. Realize the repercussions of your actions both ways. If you like the place, want to come back and have great service, or seated quickly, then you choose to pay more money. If you want to go back to the place as the group with the 7 credit cards, that stiffed Florence Jean last time and expect to ever gets drinks, go ahead.

Wait staff out in Wash, Oregon and Cali get the full state min wage in those places. $8-$9 an hour before tips.

I don't know how any self-respecting guy lets a girlfriend pay for his meal. And then when it comes to the table's attention that the waitress got only a 9% tip, you still leave the place having contributed nothing?? Yet you have the nerve to say that someone else in the group has the reputation of being a cheapskate? That's rich....Gloopan Kuratz is way off IMO concerning Danny Mac, but he's on the money here.

Server minimum wage in Wisconsin: $2.33 per hour

If you cannot (or will not) tip properly (at least 15% but ideally 20%) for decent service then don't go out.

In a group that size if there is no auto-gratuity then the numbers guy in the group should figure out the tip and/or tell every one what they owe.

As for the server she should not have confronted you about the tip. However she also should never have agreed to give you separate checks.

Got another tipping question for you fine folks.

While we were out of town a couple weeks back we ordered pizza from a place and had it delivered. The bill came to $30 and some change and included a $3.50 delivery fee. My wife and I had a argument/discussion over this deal. Does the delivery guy get that fee? Do you tip on top of a delivery fee?
