Drove from Carol Stream to West Side of Chicago. Some rain, dark clouds, lightning and one thunder clap that made me jump. But that's about it.

Storms were insanity last night. Thunder and lightning were making sure to wake your ass up. Some roads are flooded in NW 'burbs. Didn't even give Milwaukee Ave. a try. Des Plaines river prolly going fuck people's shit up again. :(

Good luck out there for the Northern Cook, McHenry, and Lake County folks...ponds are full and discharging to the ditches. I drove through 8" of water on Milwaukee Avenue near the McDonalds on Rte. 22. Indian Creek is overflowing to the Des Plaines River...

Buffalo Grove received 4.96” of rain in 3-hours which is well in excess of a “100-year” rainfall event. Our regulatory 100-year, 3-hour rainfall event is 3.77”. I did a linear extrapolation of the 25-year, 50-year and 100-year rainfall values in our Ordinance to get estimated rainfall values for 175-year rainfall events. Buffalo Grove came out as a 153.6-year event…the highest, by far, that I’ve seen. Technically, this is probably a meaningless number but it gives everyone an idea of how extreme the rainfall event was.

Lake Zurich received 4.7” in 3-hours which comes out to a 136.2-year event.

I think this storm caught everyone by surprise. My impression last night was that the greatest chance for heavy rainfall was down by I-80 but a few miles doesn’t mean much to a storm the size of a state.

It looks like the rain is pretty much gone for now. The probability of more rain bounces up and down between 20% and 50% over the next few days but we shouldn’t be having a repeat of this morning any time soon.

Seems like we're having "100-year" thunderstorms every three years or so.

100-year storm titles are misleading -- they do not have anything to do with a storm happening once every 100 years.

They are technically 1% chance rainfall events over a certain period of time, which is why Bob put "100-year" in quotes.
For example 6.5" of rain in Lake County over 24 hours is a 1% chance storm...or "100 year event", 3.77" in 3 hours is also a 1% chance storm.
The records don't go back as far as we've been on the planet so, the math is as current as it can be. We basically all started using the same technology in 1914.

Had the ark with Ice King at the helm crawl into bed with us around 2:30. Lost power, but hey i had Ice King. My commute was faster then normal this morning, but the lot was a tad under water. One of the streets by me made the NW herald as it was under water

HOT AND HUMID WEATHER WILL CONTINUE OVER THE MIDWEST THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE WORK WEEK... THANKS TO A PERSISTENT AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE STALLED ACROSS THE REGION. HIGHS WILL BE IN THE LOW TO MID 90S TODAY AND THURSDAY.

WITH AFTERNOON HEAT INDEX VALUES NEAR 100 DEGREES. A WEAK AFTERNOON LAKE BREEZE MAY KEEP AREAS ALONG THE SHORE A LITTLE COOLER TODAY... LIMITING HIGHS THERE TO THE UPPER 80S AND A HEAT INDEX AROUND 95. NO LAKE COOLING IS EXPECTED THURSDAY OR FRIDAY HOWEVER... WITH AFTERNOON HIGHS EXPECTED TO REACH THE MID 90S IN MANY SPOTS AROUND CHICAGO AND HEAT INDEX VALUES BETWEEN 100 AND 105 DEGREES.

TEMPERATURES IN THE CITY WILL LIKELY REMAIN IN THE 80S MUCH OF TONIGHT AND THURSDAY NIGHT... PROVIDING LITTLE RELIEF FROM THE HEAT. RELIEF WILL ARRIVE LATE FRIDAY HOWEVER... AS A COLD FRONT APPROACHES FROM THE NORTHWEST BRINGING THE POTENTIAL FOR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS TO PARTS OF THE AREA... FOLLOWED BY COOLER AND LESS HUMID WEATHER OVER THE WEEKEND.

I live south of that danger area, and I had some branches down this morning.

It was a maple tree, and they do shed their branches quite easily.

I've actually been thinking of growing more than one next year just because they get damaged so easily by wind without other tall plants next to it. /shark

I've used my A/C a grand total of like 9 days. My electric bill for July '13 was $60.
Last July, $132. Last August, $100.
I was thinking of buying lube with my savings.
