I had a running joke with my Cub fan neighbor, I'd always holler..."put in MARMOL!!" Gonna have to think of a new line.

Sure dodged a bullet by not trading him earlier this year .... or the offseason .... or last year .... or last offseason .... etc.

I know you can't win them all, so to speak, but this is a major fuckup on Theo and the gang unless absolutely nobody wanted him - I don't mean wouldn't give much, I mean wouldn't take him period.

didn't they decline the haren deal because of haren's health?? A broken haren is better than this.

don't bury the lead that ian stewart got what he want and thus the cubs have validated his twitter "outburst" as being a good move since he's got exactly what he wanted.... and the cubs are still responsible for both of these salaries, barring some really stupid waiver claims, right?

i'll miss marmol.... his jerseyshirt is the only piece of cubs paraphrenalia that i've ever spent my $$$ on in my life. i'll always remember that when he first started kicking ass (remember that season he had ~138k in ~78ip? is that a reliever record? mariano rivera had like ~132 in 107IP in '95 or '96) b&b had him on and asked him what's going through his head when he's out there on the mound doing his thing and he giggled and asked "...really?" and dan persisted so marmol retorted "you have no chance!"

that's a proper look into the psyche of carlos marmol, as for better or (especially lately) worse, he had no idea where the fuck the ball was going. when he was confident in his ability to ride that bucking bronco and get enough plate to get people to wave at his breaking pitch, he was a sight to behold.... again don't forget those 138k in 78IP.... that's tremendous. but once he lost his confidence in throwing that breaking pitch for strikes, he never really had a dominant fastball, and when he couldn't locate THAT and had to do get-me-overs (usually at the point he loaded the bases) --- yeah, it got real bad real quick.

i'm a minority in that "the carlos connection" of the tail end of zambrano's usefulness and marmol shutting the door behind him was my favorite 1-2 punch in all of baseball. i'll always remember that mets game circa ~07-08 where zambrano blanked them for 8 and marmol came in and did the FU "you have no chance" closing job and i ran outside to get a marmol jerseyshirt immediately afterwards..... now that shirt will have to wait another ~10-15 years to be a proper punchline when i whip it out like a baseball hipster in the bathroom of chicago's legendary "the man hole" bar.

Too bad he could never gain any consistency.

What is really sad is that as RPB has pointed out most people will never remember how good he was for a stretch and will only remember how bad he has been over the last couple of years.

I guarantee you he will be pitching meaningful innings in the playoffs this year.

Go Cubs, Win!

They have 10 days to trade or release him. I bet some desparate team steps up and offers them a broken armed pitcher or a 1 legged infielder but you're right. They should have traded him a LONG time ago.

I'll mostly remember the 16K/9 inning season because when he sucked the Cubs sucked too.

Hahn should offer Alexei and Gavin Floyd.

That devastating slider just disappeared the last couple years. In his prime, he was virtually untouchable, but now, he's a reclamation project. Will he ever become a premier reliever again? Doubtful.

He did pitch well in non-closing situations so he may survive in the league, but barring some pitching coach getting him straightened out, his days of being a dominant reliever are over.

Back in the big leagues with the dodgers. I can't wait until he trots his dead ass out there in those skin tight pants and gives up bomb and bomb after walk after walk for the Dodgers.

1.2 ip 3ER 4H 1BB. I don't even know if he started the inning clean. He may have allowed the starters runs to score as well.

Not good for the Cubs. If the Dodgers cut him, I remember reading the Cubs would have to eat more salary. They may give him another outing or 2 or they may just launch his ass.

Wow. That is stunning analysis.

If he's bad, he might not make it much longer, but if he's great, someone might sign him. Dear god where would we be without this man's acumen?

Oh well. See how easy it is to say stupid shit and it is quite believeable that Steve said that stupid shit.
No one said "Jesus Steve ain't dumb enough to say something that damn stupid". Nope.
