Arrieta has continued to suck shit it appears.

Man, some of the pitches Strop threw last night were just horrific. The wild pitch that sent the potential tying run to 3rd in the 8th was just short of Nuke hitting the Durham Bull. Navarro saved another wild pitch on the very next delivery too. Otherwise the score would have been tied. Navarro and Castillo are likely to be sporting a few extra bruises in the weeks to come, thanks to Strop. But he got out of the jam, so all's well that ends well.

Is there really a point in trading him for nothing and paying his salary? Chase whitley doesn't seem like a great haul but I haven't gotten a report on his stuff.

Unless they are getting something potentially useful down the road, there's no point in trading Soriano. Him being in left isn't preventing someone else from getting playing time, he's a good clubhouse guy etc.

Obviously there's a sliding scale relative to the amount of money the Cubs would pay based on the quality of the prospect they get back.

At the same time though, is his value ever going to be higher? He has like a 1.000OPS the past month. For a 37 year old, there's a good part of me that feels even if you can snag a potentially useful bullpen arm down the road you do it.

The Cubs better be competing for a wild card spot next year. He'll have more value swatting 25 HRs than a bullpen arm.

You can argue that with DeJesus coming back, Lake deserves a spot.

I read somewhere that the NYY would pay the remaining 7M this year then the Cubs eat the 18M next year. This year the ARod money pays for Soriano then next year the extra MLB $$ the Cubs get pays for Soriano. Having said all that however, yes they should get something decent which is why they are still negotiating. Supposedly the Yankees have a bunch of bullpen arms so something may get done.

Will Soriano accept the trade??

As for Soriano, the guy's been a great teammate and has been productive but yea, if you can save 7M and get decent value back, you gotta move him.

Give back Nik Turley in exchange for Soriano and most of his cash and I am in. I don't really want a reliever that isn't a prospect back along with paying all the money.

It really depends. I'd also be in for that. I'd take crap back if Yanks pay a lot more of the cash which can be used in the FA/Int'l signing markets. I don't think the Yankees want to take a lot of money on with luxury tax concerns and Robinson Cano is about to get paid.

I think AT MINIMUM they want a guy who will pitch in the MLB bullpen very soon. If you can get a solid 7th inning guy in his early 20's who is MLB ready very soon and save 7M, do it. I'd also want at least a couple A ball high ceiling guys as well for the helluva it.

Turley is a pretty good starting LHP. He just got promoted to AAA. I would rather have him. Arietta and Neil Ramirez(if he is the ptbnl) can both be good bullpen arms now. I would personally like Arietta to continue to develop as a starter but Ramirez has had enough time and should go to the pen now where he would be excellent.

Carrie says a Sori deal is not Goff:

If they are flying to PHX to talk to him, I think we are at 2 Goffs.

Some Cubs blogger saying they are taking down Soriano's picture in the clubhouse. If so, hilarious way to find out about the deal.

From this story which in itsself is head slappingly annoying.....I found this tibit to be particularly irksome.....

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-chicago-soriano-cubs-20130725,0,2876800.story

Dempster agreed to go to a few teams, but the trade didn’t go as smoothly as either side had hoped, to say the least. When word of a deal with Atlanta leaked out before Dempster had waived his no-trade rights, the veteran pitcher was visibly angry about the leak, saying the report was not true and lashing out at the media. Dempster declined to go to Atlanta, holding out hope he could be sent to the Dodgers to be with his friend Ted Lilly.

Dempster famously was allowed to hang around the Cubs’ offices at the trade deadline, where he claimed he played Golden Tee as the Cubs’ brass tried to deal him. He ultimately was sent to Texas at the last minute, but only after the Cubs had him talk to the Dodgers to convince him they did not want to trade for him.

What a pud.

They fucked up big time in not dumping Russell 2 weeks ago when he still had value. He now is about as worthless as a Mike Quade major league baseball manager futures contract.

I would be interested in hearing more about Ian Kennedy as a possible pick up by the Cubs. I would do Jackson for him straight up. Doubt they would.

From MLBTradeRumors (I know, I should stop reading that shit, but the quote is important): "The asking price on Jeff Samardzija is "higher than the Sears Tower," according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The Cubs are essentially asking that teams let them take what they want from their farm systems. While the Diamondbacks have shown interest, several other teams have made offers as well."

The Cubs are way too high on Samardzija, aren't they? I just can't see them being able to convince any team that he is more than a decent #2 starter.

No shit there. Has there been a player who has fucked his value up more than Russell? They might as well trot Will Ohlman out there at this point.

Latest rumors are Schierholtz likely to be moved today. Much moreso than Russell or Gregg

I'd sell high on Schierholz. You won't get much for Gregg but they should find someone willing to pay a decent price for him. Russell has fallen off a cliff value wise and they'd have to find someone desperate in order to get any kind of a decent prospect for his sorry ass.
