Untrue.

I've seen plenty of "good riddance" and "fuck that bum" sentiments regarding Soriano.

Putz.

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS 13m #cubs are expected to pay more than half the $25M to go on sori thru '14, assuming deal gets finalized.

If they get over 10M in salary relief, then that's pretty damn good.

The 2 people that say good riddance to Sori are like the 2 people that like princess candygrimace. Sure they exist but they are 2 in a million and their opinions are irrelevant. :D

Cubs Den

By John Arguello, today at 12:21 pm UPDATE: 9:12 PM: Josh Norris, who is the beat writer for theTrenton Thunder for the Trentonian, is tweeting that he's hearing RHP Corey Black may be involved. Of all the names mentioned, he's the one that intrigues me the most. He's undersized, but has similar athleticism and build as Travis Wood. He can also bring it, able to pitching last year at 95-98 with sinking movement with some reports that he touched 100 mph in instructional league. His changeup is solid and his secondaries lag behind, though the slider is further along than the curve. He has struck out 9.58 batters per 9 innings and although he has walked 4.90 per 9 IP, he does have the kind of athleticism to repeat his delivery and develop better command.

At this point, with 1 year left, I would have no problem keeping Soriano.

But they do need arms.

I never really liked the guy. When the team was supposed to compete, he didn't step up and be a leader, and he never came close to living up to that contract. He seem to become a better player in the past couple seasons when it didn't matter, and he's the last symbol of the complete failure of Jim Hendry. That's why I would say good riddance. Maybe the hate for him was over the top at times, but when you're the highest paid player on the roster, you're going to get that. I hope he does well for the Yanks.

Corey Black and 8 or so million in salary relief would be a very satisfactory return for Sori. Wish him the very best. Overly vilified due to a contract that wasn't his fault.

I agree with the bold part, but in 2008 Soriano pretty much carried that offense to a division title. He was never going to live up to $138 million, but thats Hendry's fault. He's the same player he always was, and he is not the reason the Cubs went 0-6 in the Division Series in '07 and '08.

I think there's a lot of revisionist history going on with Soriano. Guy was a pretty big prick his 1st few years here. The insistence of batting leadoff even though he was a power bat was bullshit. Unfortunately, Pinella gave into his diva act.

The Legend that was this trade:

Hendry was negotiating a 5 year deal, but John McDonough was Mr President who then called Sori's agent and asked what would it take to get the deal done so Soriano was in Chicago the next day! Agent said, 2 More years, McDonough said "DONE" and thus the 7 year anchor was created!!

Another Chicago Media, we arent talking about it issue.

Ever hear anyone say anything bad about McDonough? Never

Another nice deal by the Cubs. Flipping a depreciating asset for $7.5M and a good prospect.

Agreed.

I was one of the few who have supported Soriano. Great teammate and his power streaks (non PED enhanced) were always impressive. Unfortunately, he and the team didn't get it done in the playoffs, so frankly, the contract has to be viewed as a mistake when taken in that context, but kudos to a guy who respected the game and was (and is) a class act.

Now let's hope Junior Lake continues to emerge as a keeper!

Agree with everything you say there Frank except the last sentence regarding playoffs. He absolutely was one of the main reasons the Cubs were 0 for 6 in playoff games. He was not the only reason, but when you are the main cog and don't show up in the playoff games you are one of the main reasons. With that said I've never hated Soriano. He's actually been great with the fans all these years. I have very fond memories of the guy.

A lot of great opinions in this thread, but I agree with Kirkwood. Good job by the Cubs for saving a little money at least but getting another pitcher who had Tommy John surgery? The kid had it in High School but he seems really strong with his velocity.

They are choosing between crappy A starting pitcher Corey Black or AA closer Tommy Kahnle.

I would take Kahnle. The big story is the money. Cubs will pay $17.7M left on the contract.

According to reports, #Cubs getting RHP Corey Black, 21, in Soriano deal. 4th round pick in 2012

If Black can really throw 100, I'm intrigued.
