Sox take fans' temperature in survey

By Mark Gonzales, Tribune reporter
8:13 pm, July 27, 2013

One year after conducting a survey that led to lower ticket and parking prices, the Chicago White Sox are conducting a poll with selected fans to gauge their feelings toward the 2013 season and in the future.

A copy of the survey, obtained by the Tribune, stresses the franchise's commitment to communicating with their supporters through the team's short and long-term plans.

The questions presented to the selected fans were:

1. From a fan's perspective, what things would you like us to keep in mind as we go through the changes needed to improve the team?

2. What has disappointed you the most about this White Sox season?

3. What excites you the most about the White Sox going forward this year and in seasons to come?

Coincidentally, the survey is being conducted before Wednesday's 3 p.m. (CDT) non-waiver trading deadline, in which the Sox could be active sellers in an effort to strengthen their personnel for the future.

They don't care about their fans.

Jerry loves the surveys.

They should be surveying those who DONT come to Sox games.

My answer to Number 2 was this:

I can't make a commitment to buy season tickets for a team that may lose 100 games. The current economics of baseball are such that going to a game is no longer a snap decision like it was when I could buy a bleacher ticket for 5 bucks. I'll still go to some games and probably be back to purchasing a package when you put a quality team out there. I just can't pay big league prices for Blake Tekotte and Casper Wells.

You know who I won't pay big league prices to see? Chris Sale. Asshole gives up 1 run over 8 innings. How can I expect my team to win when the starter goes the distance and gives up 1 run? What a bum....

Rongey told me last Saturday that if they trade Rios, thats not a problem because they have Blake Tekotte ready to go! Buddy Bell agreed, Tekotte was ready! I had to say, WHO?

Bullshit.

They were nowhere to be found last year.

That team wasn't truly worth jumping on the bandwagon for though . Any smart fan recognized that even if they were able to make the playoffs (which wasn't something I personally believed would happen) they were not truly a contending team. Not a team built well enough to have a chance to get to, much less win, a World Series by any means. In most divisions, they would not have really contended for their division, but due to a poor 1st half by the Tigers, they were able to be pretenders, if not true contenders. But I think even Sox fans who were honest with themselves, saw the team as less than a true contender.

So a smart fan only goes if a team is guaranteed to make a run in the playoffs?

No, a White sox fan will often only buy a ticket and go to a game if they feel their team is guaranteed to make a playoff run. That's the subject of the thread. God knows that Cub fans are not so conditional in their support.

Gotcha.

So we agree Sox fans will find any excuse to not go to a game.

Certainly there are diehard Sox fans who will go to games even if the team struggles. But there are a whole lot of Sox fans that definitely fit neatly into that category.

One year after conducting a survey that led to lower ticket and parking prices

Is this true? I mean, I kinda doubt the validity of the survey being the impetus for change.

Hard hitting journalism from Gonzalez. Looking forward to his work on the Cubs beat next year

Yeah, did they really need a survey to tell them the fans would like lower prices?

My guess is they had planned to drop some ticket prices, but I think they might have gotten a real push to drop parking prices because of the survey. They dropped it bye $3 during the week. Its only $10 on Sundays which is cool.

I PREDICT!!

Whatever the Sox do, they will claim that is what the "fans" wanted them to do from the survey.

I know I said this before but JR had a survey a few years ago that came to the conclusion that JR was not the problem.

I'm just happy we have an owner who can park a car and sell a hot dog.
