I was reading my Bears media guide sent to me as a season ticket holder and I noticed the Trestman has a stellar resume up to the point of taking and staying in a CFL job. I don't think it is a matter of him being able to be successful. He has proven that he can. It is just a matter of weather the league passed him by in his years away.

Honestly, yes. At the very minimum, I bet he studied the hell out of last season.

The guy is intellectual and pragmatic. I don't think him being away will be a problem. Hell adjust and adapt based on what he sees on the field. It'd be an issue if the guy the Bears hired was rigid, narrow minded, and married to a "system" to such a degree that he's incapable of thinking outside of it. I don't think we have that problem here.

If anything, Trestman will fail if he can't get guys to buy in, or, like Smith, he can't produce consistently good results on both sides of the ball.

Tresty is in a hard spot b/c the defense is not going to win the turnover lottery like they did last year. That will be his fault.

If the defense regresses as much as the offense improves, they will be fine.

The whole notion of him being gone and thus clueless is blown out of proportion. If he tries to pull in some CFL crap that clearly won't work... he'll have a QB, a WR, multiple position coaches and an offensive coordinator to tell him it won't work. Checks and balances are in place.

They may not lead the league, but if the DC continues the same principles Smith implemented, they should still be a nuisance to other offenses.

Agreed. And I think he'd he'd also be able to see that for himself, in addition to being willing to listen to other voices when he can't, like you mentioned.

Sure, but I believe Trestman is way more flexible than Martz was. Of course Trestman can be flexible and open-minded and still fail at bringing the offense into NFL modernity, but I don't think that would be because he left the NFL to become a visiting professor of sorts in the CFL.

Yes, definitely. We got to see some of that stuff when Martz was here in like 2011. A pass-catching RB is a luxury you've got to utilize, to state the obvious. For whatever reason it was toned down last year.

I've got to qualify my Lovie love by saying he's the only coach I've known since I started watching the Bears on a regular to semi-regular basis, but I do think he's a solid coach. If he can get serious about learning offense, and pinpointing as OC guys that come from a specific philosophy that's been proven to work today, then I think he'd be an excellent coaching candidate.

I don't think there's enough data to support that position. Trestman has never been a NFL HC until now. He's close to a proven commodity on offense, but his leadership skills at this level are an unknown.

The number of check downs in the practice I saw was noticeable. If Forte stays healthy, that may be a possibility.
