Gillaspie looked like the most surprised guy in the park when that ball went out of the park. It looked like he just put an emergency swing on it.

Can they get someone on base before one of these home runs??

Alexei with 2 more errors tonight. It's really not hard to understand why the Sox are so bad this year when you think about how god awful they have been up the middle. De Aza is terrible, Alexei has been horrible, Flowers was putrid and Beckham's replacements have been bad.

They replaced Flowers with Phegley and Beckham's wrist injury shouldn't be a long term problem. They desperately need to upgrade from the butt nugget twins and this will be a drastically different team next year both offensively and defensively.

I'm trying to think of a player who has ever done more to lose baseball games than De Aza and I can't think of anyone. His defense is atrocious and his base running is way fucking worse. He gives away runs in the field and on the bases. He pops up on the infield almost as much as he strikes out. He's easily one of if not the worst ball players I've ever had the misfortune of watching. Centerfield is a vital position and I can't wait until the Sox upgrade from this piece of shit which won't be very hard to do.

Another brilliant pitching performance wasted. Everyday I say I can't believe how god awful this offense is and somehow they manage to get worse. I'd say getting shut down by one of the worst starting pitchers in major league baseball is a new low but how can you tell. I bet every bad pitcher in baseball has the Sox circled on the schedule. Pathetic.

JORR thinks Sale pitched like shit.

No, just not as well as Wade Davis who I'm sure you think is a much lesser pitcher than Sale.

The game should have been tied if Rios runs the bases properly and tags up in the ninth. if that ball drops he can walk home. Why aren't we talking about that?

These two quotes contradict each other.

Not true. When Davis left the game he had a 1-0 lead. Anyway, we can't change what occurred. Davis and Sale weren't pitching a theoretical game. They were pitching the one that actually happened. Nobody would say Sale "pitched poorly", but he just didn't pitch as well as Davis. That's tough to argue. The respective offenses are very similar and the Sox had the advantage of playing on their home field.

Davis pitched a lot better than Rios ran the bases, I'll give you that.

I can't figure out why you are so reluctant to credit the pitchers who are opposing Chris Sale. It always gets into an idiot conversation about, "oh, so he's supposed to pitch a shutout every time". As if it's reasonable to expect mediocrities like Wade Davis to pitch shutouts but not have similar expectations of the guy you insist is better (Chris Sale) who they are facing.

If you want to say that Sale covered five more outs than Davis, that's a legitimate point. And then we can have a philosophical discussion over whether zero runs allowed in 7-1/3 innings is better than one run allowed in 9 innings.

Davis came out of the game leaving his fate in the hands of a guy(s) who almost certainly were not going to be as good on July 27, 2013 as he was and, if not for Rios making another Sox baserunning error, Holland would have blown his win.

I believe Sale's WHIP for the game was slightly better than Davis'.

Miguel Tejada still raking knocks in a go-ahead run for K.C.. if the Sox were going to truly go for it this season (foolish thought), they probably would have been better off signing him than Keppinger .

I don't have a dog in this fight but Sabremetric godfather Bill James developed a stat called game score. Last night Sales had a game score of 74 while Davis had a 71 both good but certainly not anywhere near the top of the all time list.....

Here is the way to calculate Game Score

Start with 50 points.
Add one point for each out recorded, so three points for every complete inning pitched.
Add two points for each inning completed after the fourth.
Add one point for each strikeout.
Subtract two points for each hit allowed.
Subtract four points for each earned run allowed.
Subtract two points for each unearned run allowed.
Subtract one point for each walk.

Last night Sale had a game score of 74 while Davis had a 71 both good but certainly not anywhere near the top of the all time list..... but solid.

Game Score is stupid bullshit that doesn't put as much weight in retiring every batter faced as it does with striking out lots of guys.

Fuck Bill James is his ear.

Even you have to admit that GameScore is a bigger pile of rhinoceros excrement than Keeping Score.

Jason Giambi really shouldn't be allowed to play the game anymore.

Any time they want to end Ramon Troncoso experiment is fine by me.

That was a real nice first inning for Rienzo. He doesn't fuck around. He just gets it and throws it.

Rienzo doin some work. That's impressive striking out the 2-3-4 hitters and they're all left handed.

That was a really nice outing from Rienzo. He had a tough inning thanks to Alexei's error but he battled around it. He has pretty good stuff though he still has a couple things to work on.

So Rios comes out of the game after fouling a ball off his foot the night before the trade deadline.
