An appeals board ruled Tuesday that Eddie Vanderdoes can play for UCLA this fall.
Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly respectfully disagrees with that decision.
The Irish coach indicated in a statement Wednesday that he still does not believe Vanderdoes, the former Notre Dame five-star signee, should be allowed on the field in 2013 after backing out of his letter of intent.
"While I disagree with yesterday's decision by the NCAA National Letter of Intent Appeals Committee to reverse its original ruling and grant Eddie Vanderdoes a complete release from his NLI, I understand and respect the entire appeal process," Kelly said in a statement released by the school.
"However, this result does not change my opinion concerning the importance of protecting the integrity of the NLI program, nor will it change our approach to the process going forward."
Vanderdoes, a 300-pound prospect from California, whose signing was one of the coups of Notre Dame's 2013 recruiting haul, ultimately decided to transfer to UCLA before setting foot in South Bend.
Notre Dame would not release Vanderdoes from that letter of intent, though, meaning the player would have had to sit out a season under NCAA transfer rules.
The decision rendered Tuesday upends that and means Vanderdoes is eligible to play immediately for the Bruins. Rivals.com ranked Vanderdoes as the No. 21 player nationally in the Class of 2013 and the No. 2 defensive tackle.
