Brees gave three dollars more than I would have. I refuse to tip on takeout.

METAIRIE, La. -- Drew Brees says he's amazed his $3 tip on a $74 takeout order last month has become a talking point on national television and the Internet.

The quarterback was in the locker room at Saints headquarters Thursday morning when he noticed a discussion on a network morning show about tipping on takeout orders, referencing a photograph of his takeout receipt that was circulated online.

SportsNation: Tipping on takeouts?

SportsNation Drew Brees' takeout tip has caused a buzz on the Internet. How much do you tip on takeout orders? Cast your votes!

Brees said he figures the person who initially photographed the receipt did so innocently because he visits the San Diego-area restaurant regularly and poses for photos with staff.

The quarterback said he was disappointed "that it actually got spun and perceived as -- you immediately jump to the conclusion that 'He stiffed a waiter or waitress.' That's the part that bothers me."

Brees suggested the headline to the initial blog post about his tip could have been about how he even tips on takeout orders, "but nobody's going to read that."

Brees' contract with the Saints pays $100 million over five years.

The quarterback smiled often while discussing the matter, and said he'll be happy if his takeout tip turns out to be the biggest controversy he has to discuss all season.

On takeout orders? Nothing.

I've been known to go to the bar and order takeout, but even then, my tip is based on the couple of beers I had while waiting.

Nobody considers tipping at McDonalds. Why is carry-out different at most other places?

Note: I do tip a buck or 2 if an actual waitress is tasked with putting the order together.

Yes, avoiding a tip is the driving force behind most carry-out orders.

Or maybe you just want to pick up the food and eat it at home, rather than running home, taking a shower, getting dressed to go out and then finally going to the restaurant to eat. For me, sometimes it's just a matter of time.

Don't any of your fans ever pick up the to-go order for you, Steve?

The issue is less clear than some of you would make it.

1. At McDonalds, staff, while not earning a fortune, are all paid at least minimum wage. No tipping necessary.

2. If you order your carry out at a full service restaurant it is likely sub-minimum wage wait staff or bartenders who take and package your order. And it can be quite a process -- dealing with all the packaging and making sure you get all the extra napkins and condiments you ask for, etc -- and it can be a pain especially when one at the same time has several tables or bar guests who ARE TIPPING.

A 10% tip on a carryout at a full service restaurant won't kill you -- you are saving more than that by not purchasing beverages.

Good call.

Our daughter is a hostess at Champs.

She is paid 5.25 plus tips. She receives tips from wait staff and on some take out orders. With take out orders, she takes the order, puts it into the system and then bags the order and brings it to the guest when they arrive for pick up.

NO, asshole, I do not want to announce my tip in front of the entire restaurant, especially if the service was bad and I am not going to be rewarding the waitress with anything over the requisite 15%. How dare you? This is MY OWN PRIVATE OPPORTUNITY to evaluate my experience at your restaurant - do not try to commandeer my choice by injecting shame and peer pressure.
You'd love the way they do it in Canada then. In most places the waitress brings a portable credit card swipe machine to the table which actually lists the (percentage) choices for a tip to add on when you pay. All the while she/he is standing right in front of you.

You see that in Florida too. I believe it is because of the European tourists, who often are not accustomed to tipping in restaurants. Many restaurants there add a service charge.

So, we're now supposed to tip for just cooking our food? Maybe I should start tipping the people at Wal-Mart for ringing me up. And the greeter for saying "Good morning."

The only thing worse would be a person who also requires a tip calculator to tip on takeout.
