I get offended by the fake outrage directed at this show.

Every time I hear Bernstein blast racists like Cooper and Dean I think of that story about him. I always am aware of the fact that he's one of them.

He was courtside at a pickup game at some mini-camp and someone commented on the skills of one of the players. Bernstein (as it was told to me) said, "He's just gonna wind up in jail anyway."

And you're correct. I take it with a grain of salt when Bernstein decries bigotry. He is either dismissive or legitimately unaware of how bigoted he himself is.

I never said it shouldn't be considered offensive. The words "cocksucker" or "motherfucker" are offensive in the correct context.

My opinion is that there is too much import projected onto the "N-word". It seems to me, marginalizing the word might lessen the impact, giving us more time to focus on "real" issues...

I understand Makalu. And I don't want you to think I was trying to be combative. Sometimes it's a sore subject with me.

That's how I remembered it. And if some white athlete or actor had this very same scenerio caught on camera, Bernstein would hit the siron after catching it on his twitter field and go medieval on his ass.

CSFMB: We gotcha, Dan.

Bernstein:

Terry: Eeeee eeee eeee

Beardown: Exactly, Terry. Exactly. But we'll get you eventually, too.

Was this from a legitimate source? If so, that actually does surprise me a bit. I always figured DB had a subconscious prejudice toward others, but I never though it would be so blatant, given his affinity for admonishing others for similar (or not quite as offensive) things.

It was from one of my radio teachers at Columbia College who knew a lot of people from the Score. She was a sportswriter who is good friends with Grobber. She claims to be the one to whom Bernsie made the comment and she said she was disgusted with him. I believe this was before Boers and Bernstein teamed up.

Wow. That's a pretty credible source. Dan Bernstein may be the best actor of our time, given that information. What a piece of shit.

She explained in class and in detail the entire Grobber/Julie Swieca credential thing. She painted Swieca as a real bitch.

How did the story about Bernstein come up? Was it just her wanting to point out to everybody what a hypocrite and scumbag he is? Good for her.

I asked her in class specifically if Bernstein is as much of a jerk in real life as he seems to be on the radio. She then told that story. After telling that story, she said that Boers is a sweetheart in real life.

The trouble with privileged people like Bernsie is that they do charity or active work in civil rights or something and that makes them all good. Hey look at me. They likely don't realize what the hell they are doing racially wrong or insensitive. Otherwise they would never say what was in that story or ever talk about breeding etc. The other thing is he is in a perfect spot if he was a racist. Serious when he wants and always able to fall back on the "i'm funny, comedy doing a dumb sports show'.

I guarantee he would also fall back on "It has nothing to do with his color. He is just a thug. I would say the same thing about a white guy." FAIL.

The disingenuous outrage offends me more than the offensive comment itself. I felt the same with the Paula Deen deal. Let's stop pretending like non-blacks don't say this word.

I understand.

On the other hand, being lumped in with racists kinda sucks, so I understand the emotions that lead people to be so vocal about it.

The only thing about Paula Deen was she answered like "Are you crazy? Of course Ive used it"

Its not THAT common

But feigned outrage is not good

I remember using the word once in the presence of my dad, and he admonished me appropriately.

Is any of that right? Nope. Is it the culture? Yep. I wish it weren't, but it is. The problem is that, in my estimation, the GREAT majority of people under the age of 50 or so who use it do it because it's culturally accepted and makes them feel "tough." They don't actually hate black people; however, the continued ignorance and culture of being "tough" by using such a derogatory term is difficult to overcome. My dad was a guy who actually had balls, and I admire him more the older I get because he would forbid the use of the word even in casual conversation or over drinks; he was very rare in a culture like that.

That may all seem irrelevant, but my experience growing up shows me how disingenuous the media is. If it was like that where I grew up, it's like that in a lot of places. So don't act surprised that it's thrown around. Have the bravery to admonish its use even in casual conversation and educate those who use such hateful speech. As QBo said, there is no equivalent word in the English language. He is absolutely correct. But giving it media coverage by people who probably use it themselves does nothing to further the discussion. It creates a fabricated world in which everyone is nice and there is no hate. It doesn't exist. It is furthering ignorance with even more ignorance.

I think people overestimate how "everyone" uses it

Its not everyone and I dont think its that high of a percentage

Well, RPB, I never said "everyone" uses it, but in places like where I grew up (and many others - I'm not making myself some kind of exception), it is common. I would bet that 80% of the adult population where I grew up used it as some point in their lives.

I understand your sentiment, but they don't feel "cool" when they say asshole. When they say "genius," they are part of the adult, cool kids' club. It's very sad, but very true. They simply don't understand the history or vitriol associated with the word. It's just another word to them. It's a culture, and I don't know exactly how you erase it, but you cannot act like it doesn't exist, or it only enables the problem.

Yeah, I didnt mean to direct that at just you. Just the whole "everyone says it" theory

I also think pretending it doesnt exist is fine. Its not naive.

Its just not part of my vocabulary. And I do just fine.

Thats just my opinion. We dont need to disect the word, we need to just lose it.

Now anonymous grumblings from Philly players to the media.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/01/anonymous-grumbling-about-cooper-begins/

Yeah, this is a problem. He probably needs to be cut. Here's the problem for Cooper. It's not like it will be any better with any other team. And who wants to be the coach or GM that actually signs a racist after he's been cut. What would the players on that team think of the GM and/or coach. Probably that they are a racist.

So you make a bogus claim and then call me an ass because I don't know off the top of my head when I heard his true comments? OK, so I actually listened to (not just claimed to) the podcast and in hour 4 after the 26 minute mark Bernstein acknowledges that he has heard the "a" phrasing but that it is "splitting hairs" and "still offensive". At the 26:56 mark he states: "It's just not an acceptable word, no matter what the final syllable is."

Don't worry though Walt...my appreciation for the your posts is unaffected by this little kerfuffle.
