This is all really icky stuff, and the worst part is that Dan probably thinks he's giving black people a compliment by telling them what fine athletes they are. Do black academicians gush breathlessly over what superior athletes black people are? Probably not.

At the risk of being labeled the next Mengele, I don't really find the topic offensive. If the Amazon reviews are to be believed for this book, though, a lot of the stuff seems overly simplistic. There's also a "so what?" quality to it. If I'm buying a thoroughbred yearling, you better believe I'm looking at bloodlines. If I'm an NFL GM, not so much.

I guess the shorter way I'd put at it is that genetics probably play a huge role, but the science is way too complex (and premature) to break into Gladwellian -- or if I want to be mean, Lehrerian -- nuggets. And, thankfully, we're not as a society going to be controlling athlete genetics the way we do with livestock, so I don't get the practical use of it. Some people are genetically more athletic than others. Thesis!

That's kind of my point. There are genetic differences in humans, but without focused breeding (which should never, ever be done), the genetics doesn't have any real predictive ability, so I don't get why it should matter as a practical matter. I don't really get much value added by knowing someone race if I'm a GM. It's folly if Bernstein or anyone thinks otherwise.

I did read an excerpt from Epstein's book, I believe it was in The New Yorker. Anyway, part of his theory is based on the concept that humans have lived in Africa far longer than anywhere else. In fact, to such a degree that the gene pool in Africa is far deeper and more comprehensive than in other places where small groups simply landed after leaving Africa and have lived for relatively short periods of time. Thus, his conclusion that the ten fastest men in the world are likely African, and also, that the ten slowest men in the world are probably African as well. We simply aren't seeking out the slowest guys. I'm sure that's not exactly the kind of ringing endorsement of eugenics that dan was hoping for.

The intellectual company Dan keeps is hilarious. He loves to hate on rural gomers and the Hardcore South but I'd imagine that most of his economic and racial ideas are about in line with your average Vermilion County teabagger. Meanwhile he's giving us live reads of Deadspin columns without any apparent awareness that he's precisely the type of David Brooksian figure that people like Tommy Craggs hate the most.

Well my previous GF was 5'10-ish and ran track in HS, so I did think of the possibilities of creating an athlete with her since we both possess a tall gene. But with my luck, I'd have some 6'4 kid that's into art and fashion.
