My top five US Generals
1) George Washington - Bit of an easy pick here. His accomplishments as first President certainly overshadow his role as a General, but he was a great leader of men, military or otherwise. After cutting his teeth in the French/Indian War, Washington really shone as a leader once he took command of the Continental Army. At the time, the army was highly disorganized and morale was not where it could be. Washington implemented regimentation and was able to more effectively command. Driving Sir William Howe out of Boston was a key moment in the battle for independence, and he even showed some acumen when it came to withdrawing troops from New York once it was clear his attack had failed. He managed to hold off the British with about 15,000 men tops (and some help from the French) which gives him #1 in my book.
2) Robert E. Lee - Confederate but in my opinion, best General of the Civil War. Many people don't know that he was offered the role of General in the Union, but he declined once his home state of Virginia seceded from the Union. A bold tactician, he was able to pull off several bluffs including forcing McClellan's withdrawl, and the beat down of Pope at Bull Run II. Like Washington, he was able to do more with less, often times standing his ground with half the men that the Union was bringing. Gettysburg proved to be his Waterloo where his aggression rightly did him more harm than good. Overall, you have to respect the man and what he was able to accomplish.
3) Douglas MacArthur - Learned a lot from WWII, and perhaps his losses there did more for him in Korea than he could have had from his victories. Holding a perimiter in southern Korea, he was able to send an attack force into northeastern Korea, and pinch them together. This resulted in tragic losses for the North Korean army, and perhaps this fueled his ego as he began knocking at the door of China. Wisely back home, we realized that China wasn't the enemy we wanted to get involved with, so he was pulled back from the field, however, his highly efficient attacks and low casualty rates have to give him a place in the top five.
4) John Pershing - President Wilson sent Pershing to France to begin the build up of the American army in WWI. The French seeing the amount of men present, asked if Pershing would report through their chain of command. Pershing refused to do so -- and as the French tallied casualty after casualty after fighting straight up trench warfare, Pershing came up with the idea of fighting along the flanks. He also was the first to use airstrikes ahead of his advances to weaken the enemy position instead of just relying on artillery. He was the only living General during his lifetime. With his leadership and refusal to follow the French, thousands of American lives were likely saved.
5) Ulysses S Grant - Like many other Civil War leaders, he cut his teeth during the Mexican-American war. However, as a brigadier general, he was able to seize strongholds along the Mississippi, eventually joining up with the other Union forces in New Orleans. This effectively divided the South and provided a much faster and reliable supply chain to the battle fronts. Although considered a drunkard by many others in the army, Lincoln recognized him as an excellent tactician and planner and insisted that he remain in charge. Very resolute in his cause, Grant would go on to push Lee out of Virginia and lead to his unconditional surrender at Appomattox. US Grant is the Yin to Washington's Yang, his career is much better known for his Generalship on the battlefield than his rather poor Presidency.
