Ron Zook was shown to be a wild-eyed text messager, according to a column a year or so ago by Teddy G. In that column, it was pointed out that Zook sent many text messages regularly to recruits even during their high school class times and types out messages while driving. Some role model, huh? The NCAA has now banned coaches from using text messaging with recruits. The new rule took effect Aug. 1.

I think this is a good rule and keeps up with the times. Text messaging was an easy way for coaches to make contact with kids and in reality, was the same as mailing or talking, etc. I'm sure some coaches will bitch but it will make them returning to more traditional methods like um talking to the kids.

Fine by me. Zook will impress the recruits enough by his on-field, unrivaled coaching brilliance.

If they had put this in effect last year, Eric Gordon would be suiting up for the Illini this year.

Alright, guilty.

I might be wrong on the Gordon thing.

It's that time of year to put on the rose colored glasses and dream of the BCS title game. Everyone's 0-0. 3 weeks(+1 day) til Iowa/NIU at Soldier Field

Good thing they got rid of it. I can't see Joe Pa frantically thumbing out a text message on his Penn State themed Sidekick.

I love this time of year. 0-0 all tied for first place. I can't wait... the purple glasses are on.

This was the funniest thing from Downey's column the other day...

Quote:
The gent they call Joe Pa calls himself a dinosaur when it comes to technology. He should know, Paterno originally having been an assistant coach at Jurassic Park.

A crooked grin on his crinkled face, Paterno said, "If I was getting up in the morning and had to write 20 kids 'I love you' every day …!"

No, no text messaging for ol' Joe. Of course, some high school kid could get a bogus message from a dude who claims to be Joe Paterno.

"If he thinks it's from me, we don't want him," Paterno said. "He's dumb."

Just a little FYI Vince, as an alumni to a fellow Gateway Football Conference school (Western Illinois), Northern Iowa goes by UNI, not NIU.

Don't really know why I felt the need to bring that up, but there ya go :D

NIU = Northern Illinois University. For a Gateway conference alum, I'll give you a picture instead of words for the game :-)

It's Dyer who is a little confused here:

NIU = Northern Illinois Huskies = MAC Conference = Iowa's opponent
UNI = Northern Iowa Panthers = Gateway Conference

Ron Zook is a fine coach, possessing a razor-sharp football mind. I believe he came up with the concept of text messaging. So I'm sure he has already moved on to the next cutting edge communication technique to lure top players to the Illini.
The players can't wait to get in the building so Zook can regale them with his vast array of football information. I'm expect the Illini will turn down a BCS bowl bid this year and demand to play in the Superbowl instead.

We're not allowed to do that anymore either.

It is hostile and abusive.

Faxes. Don't forget Zook's history with faxes. The caper in which he received the faxes of the Tennessee playbook the week of the UT-Florida game has forever branded him as Zook the Crook....in Big Orange Country any way.

Some friends had a son that was recruited by Illinois and some other Big Ten schools. He didn't go to Illinois.

I don't like what she said regarding her family's experiences with Illinois and I'll leave it at that. I am concerned about the future.

Not the immediate future though, WOO-HOO, BCS Championship baby!!

So, can I start calling Zook a boob again?

Yes I did. It was in response to one of your Zook fellatio posts and I pledged to not call him a boob for the remainder of the summer and give him a chance. My post in this thread heaped nothing but praise on him for his coaching acumen.
It does sound as if there may be a leak in your Zook dike, however.

Nah, I'll still post ridiculously optimistic predictions about the Illini right up until they lose their next game.

In 2010.

Don't let me stifle your creativity. Boob-away!

Ron Zook is a boob. A boob, I say.
Thanks Doc, I needed that.

So where did the kid end up? You can't put the big tease out there and leave it hanging.

One thing for sure, the kid is better off playing for a coach who plays chess on Saturdays, instead of checkers.

I was more wondering if he ended up at Minnehaha because he liked Brewster better.

You know who is the only coach in the Big Ten with a Hawkeye tattoo?

A. Bret Bielema, Badger head coach.
