I believe they went on the air officially today about an hour ago. DirecTV channel is 358.

Anyone care? Good? Bad? Is this very tangentially akin to FOX going on the air against the "Big 3" 25 years ago (or whenever)? I don't know, just thought it might make a thread slightly more interesting than what's currently out there.

I read where they had to agree to not stream to US sites anymore to get on the major carriers ... not that it can't be gotten around, of course.

As everything eventually falls to some level of bias, which way will they go? Liberal? Conservative? Neither?

I was bored; now I'm done. Enjoy, or not.

The regular Al-Jazeera is a pretty good and fairly objective (by pathetic US standards) news channel. Unfortunately I've heard Al-Jazeera America will be it's idiot cousin, dumbed down with insipid banter and celebrity "news."

Pakistani people are not Arabic, jimmy. The original Al Jazeera is and Arabic language network. Pakistani people primarily speak Urdu.

My good friend Mark Beban (I've talked about him before, he's my teammate who has stage 4 lung, brain and liver cancer)..his brother Paul (who I used to play hockey against when he was at GBN and I was at Deerfield) is an anchor for the network. If the last name sounds familiar its cause their dad beat out OJ Simpson for the Heisman Trophy back in the day.

I was actually amazed Hanley showed restraint and didn't try to tie Al Jazeera and bad traffic together into some horrible amalgamation of humor.

I question the wisdom of trying to do a wide-focus news channel in the United States under the Al Jazeera branding. They're limiting their audience to chin-strokers who say "well, actually, for news, I watch Al Jazeera, which is actually quite unbiased." And if they get that niche, who's left to watch BBC America?
