Saw that this had a relatively high tomatometer and that it had a twist. Unfortunately the twist didn't have that great of a payoff and casting was pretty bad. It also mentioned humor, but that was few and far between.

Should have seen The World's End.

I'm all for intelligent thriller and a well executed twist. I actually enjoyed Cabin in the Woods. However this twist isn't enough and I think a good horror flick needs good tempo and timing... This was only adequate.

It's hard to call this a thriller. It was really more of a comedic horror movie.

There wasn't a twist to the movie, there were three.

1. She's a survivalist- that was revealed much to early. It pretty much ensures she is going to survive
2. Zee and the youngest son are in on it- this was poorly written especially for a horror movie. They never got to the true motivation for the killing. It doesn't appear to be hate although there is plenty of reason for it. It only appears to be money, which is odd given the parents apparent generosity.
3. Crispin is in on it- saw that from a mile away and has the same problems as #2.

They hinted that the hired killers were military trained. What military trained these fuck ups?

The key to a slasher horror movie of this kind is to never take the mask off. The moment they took off the masks, I lost interest and it really became a bad thriller movie rather than an above average horror movie.

that was my problem, actually, with the ending of "the strangers". did we really need to see them "humanized" by showing their faces at that point? it was totally unnecessary.

i have a script i'm trying to shop that's kind of in the vein of "the strangers" except it's not about masked strangers invading a house; it's more like "black christmas" about a stalker. but you know what happens from the beginning and you know who does it, there's no mystery. it's really not about that. the horror comes from deeper stuff, within.

i call it...the social...dead...work.

:D
