One day before she was to begin school an 11 year old girl was shot on her front porch in the 2300 block of North Kostner on Sunday. An unidentified woman walked by while the youngster and 3 others were gathered on the stoop after a party at the residence ended. The shooting took place AT FOUR AM! What the hell is an 11 year old doing up at 4 am the day before she was to begin classes? the Stepfather and Mother should be investigated, as they are obviously neglecting any semblance of parental responsibilities one might expect of them.

Sure,I agree. The front porch was a way of life for most in my Chicago neighborhood growing up (Grand & Avers). I knew just about every family on the block growing up. Nobody ever worried about getting shot.

Except the story in the newspaper says she was hanging out with 3 other kids on the stoop at 4am ( after a party at the residence had ended) when the woman walked by and shot 5 bullets at the group. I find it interesting that few seem to be bothered by the fact that this 11 year old was out on her stoop at 4am the day before school was to begin for her. Just how alert and attentive is the 11 year old going to be, when the Mother and stepfather are having a party till the early morning hours and still awake and hanging out at 4am? Just as it is a coach's job to put his/her athletes in a position to succeed, it is a parents job to do the same with their child. Having a child up at 4am the day before school begins, is an epic fail. That child is going to be so tired that she is likely to be falling asleep. If not asleep, most likely not attentive. It's awful parenting. Yes, the woman doing the shooting was far worse. I am not comparing the two. But these parents put this child in jeopardy by allowing her to stay up and be outside on that stoop at 4am. I hope they catch the shooter and if they do, I hope the judge gives those parents some stern advice about allowing an 11 year old to be on that stoop at 4am.

I wouldn't be mad, but I would be critical of it. I'm not mad at these parents, but I am critical of them....big difference. Why would I be mad? They aren't my kids, so if they are falling asleep in school, not attentive to the teacher and not learning as they should, it has little effect on me. I just think they are lousy parents, to be having a party that lasts into the morning and have that 11 year old still up and hanging out on their stoop at 4am. Would I also be critical of a parent that allows their child to oversleep and miss the first day of school? First off, why would the child miss the first day of school if they oversleep? Are they sleeping an extra 7-8 hours, so as to sleep through every class? If they failed to get up on time, you drive them to school as quickly as possible and they are tardy, but don't miss the day of school. But yes, not getting the kid up on time and off to school is also poor parenting. If you have to throw a bucket of ice water on them to get their ass up, that's what you do. Most kids have few responsibilities, but the one important one they have, is to get to school on time and do their school work to the best of their abilities. Not too much to ask. After all, you want them to go to a good school and not have to settle for somewhere like Purdue.

They aren't going to learn much of anything at school if they are tired from staying up until 4am preparing for the first day of school. Let them sleep. The first day is easy to make up.
Purdue is one of the top 25 schools in the country for what I went for. Did your college have a top 25 house painting program?
