There are stories that are already "picked" for us by an editor that he beleives might capture our interest. Sometimes they are right on. I also like the paper for coupons, store ads, upcoming nightlife info, etc. I'm surprised the newspaper business has hit rough times like it has,to this degree at least.

My fear was my grandmother answering the phone before me. She was a big hater. Her favorite line was "Ain't you that gal that just called here?" Very rarely was she right.

8 track players. Good god did they blow. Songs stopping in the middle bleeding out and back in on the next track. My first car a 1973 Mercury Montego had an 8 track. Last 8 track I ever bought was Led Zepplins In Through The Out Door. Upgraded to a better car with cassette soon after that.

Having to answer questions in regards to whether you were wearing Bugle Boy jeans.

Having to walk into the gas station to pay for gas..

Entertainment options in the wee hours have greatly improved

I've been up all night and Ive read some opinions on Syria, watched an episode of the wire, researched a news anchor, and caught up o. Everyone elses business on facebook

This was not possible prior to 1995

The best you could hope for was a decent old movie on tv

For nightlife, there was always Starbeat:

I remember going to Prime-N-Tender a few times in H.S. I think...or maybe I'm confusing that with someplace that was in Oak Lawn.

Walk into the gas station? Early in life you didn't even pump your own gas. You drove in over a wire that rang a bell and an attendant came out. I remember my parents taking us on a Caribbean vacation where my father had to get out and pump his own gas. It was sufficiently remarkable that we took a picture. Still early in my life I remember it switching to a lower price on gas if you pumped it yourself, which naturally led to the end of gas attendants.

I was talking with my wife at lunch and the subject of the old rotary phone came up and it reminded me how frustrating it would be to have to call people that had lots of 7, 8, and 9s in their number. Took forever.

Not going to read this entire thread, because eff that, but that's why major cities were given area codes with low digits. New York 212, Chicago 312, Los Angeles 213, etc.
