When I did go to Wrigley and a play was made, the first thing that popped in my head: "I'll catch the replay". It is natural from watching so many games on the comfort of my couch in front of a huge TV screen. You just can't beat watching any kind of game at home. I can eat,go to the bathroom, etc. without to much fuss. Also your concentration is enhanced watching on TV.
Just like all things baseball, jimmypasta gets it.

See, my definition of "fan" is someone who is passionate about something to a such a degree that he makes an extraordinary effort to follow said thing, to a degree which most people might not consider rational.

I'm a White Sox fan, and to a somewhat lesser degree, a fan of baseball in general. It's just who I am. I don't think it makes me better than anyone else. IMU and RPB are Cub fans. And I believe they are both much bigger fans of baseball in general than I am. I don't think that makes them better than I am. It just is. And I'm not a Sox fan because I go to games. I go to games because I'm a Sox fan.

I have no doubt that if there were a government ban on television, IMU and RPB and even jimmypasta would find other ways to follow their team, whether it be listening to games on the radio or whatever. And I think that's the case with most baseball fans. However, I certainly don't believe if that TV ban were in effect, that the vast majority of people claiming to be football fans would be sitting around listening to the NFL on WIND on Sunday afternoons.

You can do this without attending the games/concerts/shows.

I never said you couldn't. But most likely you wouldn't want to. It would be like saying you're a huge fan of art but that you don't need to go to the Louvre because you can see the Mona Lisa better on the Internet. To tell you the truth, that sounds like something BRick might actually say.

JORR,
If I buy a 150 dollar Cubs Starter Jacket & a 200 dollar Cubs jersey instead of going to a game, will that make me a fan as opposed to the guy who goes to a Cubs game sits there, drinks 5 Beers and doesn't pay attention to the game.

So now its just about desire to attend NFL Games, and not actually attending?
I'm sure there are many fans that want to go to see their team play that don't or can't for a number of reasons. That doesn't necessarily make them less of a fan than a season ticket holder.

The problem is that you ignore just how much of an extraordinary effort football fans make. They watch their own team, and then watch a Sunday. The stadiums are still packed at much higher rates than baseball. They just do it at home. You really seem to think that sitting in traffic, parking, and walking are pretty important I guess.

2012 radio ratings in terms of average audience:
Chicago Bears: 626,900
Chicago Cubs: 138,000
Chicago White Sox: 135,500

Let me guess. Those people are just fans of radio?

It's not about your expenditures, jimmy. It's about your emotions, your feelings. You know if you're a fan of something or not. There's no point in lying about it. Even to yourself. In fact, the very act of being a fan of something is slightly irrational. Probably not something to be really proud of.

If you say you're a fan of the NFL but watching on TV is just the way you choose to consume it, I have to assume that if that avenue weren't available, you'd consume it a different way. And if not, maybe you aren't the fan you think you are. But you don't have to answer to me. Answer to yourself. I'm not demanding a yes or no like BRick.

Because nobody can be working delivering pizza and listening to the game in the car. Most people aren't a huge fan or working weekends. Nobody can be driving to a family party (or a sunday panther wedding) that they aren't a fan of and listening to the game in the car.

No tradesman ever does a side job on a Sunday or has a Sunday as one of his/her regular work days that would be following the game on the radio. Probably not big fans of being at work at that time.

Oh, there's no problem at all, i guess reading, it sounds like i have some sort of vitriol.
You and Orr are probably the most consistently skilled trolls on the forum, so to see you go head-to-head in a battle of wits is entertaining, to say the least.

JORR,
So if Boilermaker Rick likes to jagoff a lot, does that mean he is not a fan of women because he is a fan of jagging off?

Why the fuck is my name being thrown in? Not that I view watching on TV as a bad thing, but I go to a multitude of games each year. I've been to no less than 7 Cubs games this season, and was at US Cellular twice, one in which the Cubs were not there.

I went to 3 Hawks games last season, and 3 Bulls games. One Bulls game in Milwaukee.

Your name isn't being "thrown in". You're a member of this fine establishment and a guy I thought was a good example of a baseball fan. Did you actually read the post?

By the way, I don't think viewing on television is a "bad thing" either. It's just one of the ways fans consume entertainment.

So listen to football on the radio doesn't mean you are a fan? We are eliminating a lot of ways of consuming a product. Watch on television? Fan of television. Listen on the radio? Fan of wherever you are going. It almost seems as if you are eliminating everything but attending games in person. However, I don't want to make you uncomfortable by being a bully so I won't ask the very mean question I did earlier in the thread.

 Okay, Rick. You're all over the place. You love to bring up the numbers without context when it suits your argument, but you're intensely aware of context when I tell you how many more people watched baseball this year than football. Could you try to be a little more consistent?

I honestly don't know what you are referring to. Why do you have to be so evasive to basic questions I ask? I could guess what you are saying but people get mad at me when I "tell them what they think" when I do that.

What I'm saying is that you are acutely aware of the context when the topic is how many more people see MLB games each season than NFL games, i.e., the amount of games available, but you are willfully ignorant of the context when citing the higher percentage of attendance at NFL games, i.e., the limited supply.

You said, "Most likely, they're people driving to some activity they're actually fans of while listening to football in their cars."

I merely pointed out several examples of how people can be doing something that they are not actually a fan (i.e., work, family party, wedding, etc) of yet they are still being Bears/sports fans by following their team via the radio.

So, like I said, anytime you want to post a real response to this, you just go right ahead. Otherwise, your silence is deafening.

If they were really such big fans, they'd clear their fucking schedules so they so they could watch the goddamn games. Just like I got married on Sunday, not because I'm cheap, but because the Meadowlands races on Saturday night.

What I'm saying is that you are acutely aware of the context when the topic is how many more people see MLB games each season than NFL games, i.e., the amount of games available, but you are willfully ignorant of the context when citing the higher percentage of attendance at NFL games, i.e., the limited supply.
I've explained it at least two other times. Tickets sold and percentage of attendance are flawed metrics because of the different amount of games and the size of the stadiums. If you can cite how many total tickets are sold then I will cite average attendance and average price. Both of us are using bad metrics. It's easy to spin either one of them to whatever you want to proclaim. You seem to agree with me. That's great. It's been my opinion all along.

There is a great metric that removes the cap on how many people you can fit in a stadium and how many games are played a year, but you don't accept that either so basically I'm wasting my time.

If they were really such big fans, they'd clear their fucking schedules so they so they could watch the goddamn games.
Now wait a second....I thought if they were such big fans, they'd clear their fucking schedules so they could ATTEND the goddam games?

So you think somebody tell their boss that they need to "clear their fucking schedule" so they can watch a Bears game?

Like I said a couple pages back, Stupid. Just bad logic right there.
