Don't be modest

Certainly you're capable of getting in it with the rest of us posters in posting normal....but at the heart of it you're a great writer and very intelligent

And I hate to paint regular posters here as idiots who don't read books, but I'd wager a good portion of the board has no idea who David Foster Wallace is

Just some perspective

I'm not sure what you define good portion as, but I wouldn't agree with that. Probably a lot of people who haven't read any of his stuff, but I'm pretty sure most people know the name.

Ok, fair enough, I just meant to say that most people here might not be as plugged in to literary and scholastic type worlds.

It's like the RBI stat, it doesnt mean your smart because you read him, but you're not going to find too many low brow unintelligent people that read him.

I just figured rejoyce was referring to a celebrity that would reasonably have sex with you. Twice.

Makes sense. For whatever reason, Wallace has a tremendous hold on hacky middlebrow writers who aren't half as smart as they think they are. Simmons and Klosterman both cite him as a major influence, which is mindblowing.

Beerstain does have some kind of creepy obsession with Wallace. Like, because DFW listened to their show it automatically made the show credible and not the bile-spewing cesspool of cretinism that it really is. He mentioned before some note/message Wallace wrote that he is holding on to but won't read publicly, like a covetous child. It may have been on the anniversary of his passing or maybe an '"Ask Us Anything" bit.

Klosterman I can see being a rabid Wallace fan. But Simmons? Maybe he's read some of Wallace's non-fiction essays, which are fun reads.
