Let's discuss this over a porterhouse.

No need. I've got a fast connection and the CSFMB is a better place to meet people than real life. Less hassles.

Self check out was literally my favorite thing about shopping at Jewel

Maybe they decided it wasn't a great idea to make their customers work for free. I don't see the value other than to the store that is convincing people something is "convenient" when it's really just a cost-savings effort for a corporation that has already charged you for the checkout crew.

It's about theft. Sure, they will mention customers missing the personal contact, cumbersome to use w/ produce and coupons, but the last reason mentioned is shrinkage, when it really should be the first.

I guess people were stealing more than they were saving with their Tom Sawyer Fence Painting methodology.

That's crap. I'll do extra "work" to not be hassled with small talk and people asking me if I'm having a party.

And, of course it's cost-savings. Nearly every aspect of your shopping experience is tainted with the stink of cost-savings. Why draw the line at this?

And I hate to paint regular posters here as idiots who don't read books, but I'd wager a good portion of the board has no idea who Mark Twain is.

I'll do self-checkout at da Jewels if I'm getting one or two small things. Actual, substantial grocery shopping, hell no.

How much longer till they rip them out? The one by me has like four of them.

Right. So as soon as the corporation figured out there wasn't value in it for them, they discontinued the practice. It wasn't some effort to make things more convenient for customers.

I know this really great whorehouse where they charge you $500 for a GFE and then they let you jerk yourself off. It's great! I don't have to make small talk with hookers.

yes i know your feelings on it
and i mostly agree with you- i'm not wheeling up a shopping cart brimming to the top with 200$ worth of groceries to a self checkout
but if i have 2 or 3 things its far quicker than waiting in a 10 items or less lane, and i'm willing to concede the 10 seconds of work i may be doing that a cashier could be doing for me instead

I actually think it would be kinda funny to walk up to the self checkout with like 2 carts

It must be pretty shameful to get caught stealing from the self-checkout. Not that I would know anything about the practice, but the best way to do it, if I knew the way to do it, would be with deli stuff where hey, for all you know, they didn't put the barcode sticker on right. It would also be critical to steal a glance at the little oversight terminal or whatever you'd call it to make sure no one is manning it, but not to be all obvious and "ooh, is The Coast Clear???" about it. And then you could, in theory, save six bucks on some chicken wings.

Hopefully this simply speeds up the adoption of carts that automatically know everything in it and charge you accordingly. Self checkout was a good step forward though.

i always made it a point to tell the checkout people that i supported their job when i'd choose them over the self-checkout. at this rate, we might as well give all restaurants those little table#'d light up buzzers and have everyone pick up their meal at a window because of that all encompassing fear that comes with a waitress giving you some platitudes about how her day is going.

fiji water comes to mind: "untouched by man" is their slogan, but i much prefer "fellated by machine"

The Jewel across the street from me removed them over the weekend. I should have asked her to process my credit card transaction this morning for a more personal touch.

I think you just leave it in the cart and put something bagged over it

Then you can be like "Look, Im not a fuckin bagger alright, I was rushing... there are a lot of people here and I threw this bag over steaks mistakenly, that's what you get for giving up the cashier power"

I once worked with a company that had a system for shopping without leaving one's car. Michael Saigh was the most difficult person I have ever worked with. He has hundreds of valid patents but he will never make any money and live off his uncle's trust fund forever. I believe Steve Beardsley was a defrocked minister who Saigh met in Las Cruces. At least that's what I've heard.

from what i've gathered over the years, stealing is essentially a lifestyle. i've known some genuinely dumbass people who had to nick a little <$5 thing from walgreens every time we were there, quoteth supermasochist bob flanagan on why he does things like nail his dick to a board 13 times over--- "because i can"

shakespeare was ahead of his time in saying "all the world's a stage" -- with space/bandwith increasing over time that wonderfully british paradigm of ubiquitous CCTV has joined up with facebook and twitter to turn us all into exhibitionists.

This is the end of civilization.

We should take away electricity also because evil corporations make money on that also. LET'S ALL GO BACK TO LIVING IN CAVES AND MAKING FIRE FROM ROCKS!

I'll never sleep again. This is horrible. The next time a cashier tries to make conversation with me I'm just going to scream "SCREW YOU, JORR" at them.
