...or at least folks who have been involved in hiring processes and interviewed candidates

I have an interview coming up at a company in my field, and I am hoping to hear insight from the perspective of an interviewer that I can apply to my interview. I think I'm pretty clear on what not to say or bring up, so I am looking for tips on how to stand apart from the crowd and really impress my interviewers with both my answers to their questions, and my questions when I am asked if I have any.

This is an entry-level position, and my background and education speak to the position and its responsibilities. That being said, I don't feel I have an impressive work/internship history when compared to people who already work at the company, although my education is right there with everyone else.

I get really nervous when talking about myself in these sorts of contexts, so I just want to make sure I've got some solid talking points that aren't generic or cliche. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I probably should say the position requires a lot of budget monitoring, administrative support, business communication/writing, and becoming familiar with a lot of internal and third party company guidelines and regulations.

In my experience at the end of the interview depending on how it goes ask for the job. I mean when you are leaving if you like things from your end say "I am ready to start tomorrow" or something. Literally ask for the job and leave them no question to consider others.

I recommend addressing salary requirements w/ "I'll consider your strongest offer." Doesn't require a number from you and won't pigeonhole you either way.

at the last place i worked at we were hiring for a duplicate of my position and also for a lower position in the same dept....my boss wanted me to talk to the people coming in for interviews after he did....

i'd never interviewed anyone in my entire life prior to that.

Do not come across as complaining or talking negatively about previous jobs or bosses. Be able to talk specifically about your accomplishments and how you will help the company achieve its objectives.

And the first interview is not the time to ask about salary and benefits -- even at the end when they ask you what questions you have. Instead your questions should pertain to the job and your role.

I'm actually looking for a new job right now, and will probably be quitting my current one within the next week. I found that in the interviews I've been doing, try to control the tone and conversation as best as you can. Be friendly and talkative, and the interview turns more into just a chat. I finished one about a week ago, where I was asking most of the questions, and I finished with "Do you have any questions for me?" I completely flipped the interview on them, Leon Black style.


On the other side, I'm also interviewing people for a job here at my current company. This is the first time I have interviewed anyone since I managed a blockbuster when I was 20 or 21. Some of the resumes and cover letters I've seen are a complete joke. The number one piece of advice I could give someone, is to not sound or look like a complete idiot. Proofread your shit, and have some talking points ready that you want to make sure you mention every time. You need to sell yourself. Be prepared with what you want to talk about and how your skill-set fits with the job you are interviewing for. Do some research as someone else mentioned earlier as well.

One thing that I usually tell people, especially if you don't have a lot of experience in a field, is to describe the things that you have done in the past with "action" words. This should be reflected on your resume as well.

If you mention that you "assisted the VP in the budgeting process", for example, and you were an intern, my immediate thought is that you got him coffee. Be specific about the actions that you took, even if they don't seem as important, because it shows that you did the work. So, you might say something like "Prepared schedules of expenses" or something like that.

So, typically people have bulletpoints discussing their job experience, make sure the first word of each of those are things like "prepared", "created", "designed", implemented" and avoid the "managed" (unless you were at a manager level position), "assisted", "collaborated", etc.

Agree with Nas. Also, if it is a behavioral-based interview, have 5 - 10 examples of situations you did well in to give as examples.

For example, a question could be "what was a situation where you didn't agree with your employer? How did you handle that situation? What was the result?" Think about the problem, the solution, the action, and the outcome. If you're a good liar, embellish all of them. When I am interviewing people, it is shocking how unprepared they are sometimes. If you have a bunch of examples in your back pocket to give for the questions, you will feel much more prepared, and the confidence will show.

Also, be VERY familiar with the company. Know their mission statement and goals.
