I don't understand why someone would get angry that there are self-checkouts. It could ultimately lead to lower prices for the consumer. Hell, there probably are companies who offer discounts if you do self-checkout.

And ultimately, you don't have to use them. You don't even have to stop at that store. It's economics. You have the choice.

My friend (works at Jewel) told me somebody just walked out of the Jewel self check out without paying. It's too hard to keep track when they have 2 cashiers responsible and they are checking out other customers. I think this incident tipped the scales and expedited the decision.

I wasn't the smartest youngster. I may have many illegitimate children running around. It's why I keep them on leashes.

It must be pretty shameful to get caught stealing from the self-checkout. Not that I would know anything about the practice, but the best way to do it, if I knew the way to do it, would be with deli stuff where hey, for all you know, they didn't put the barcode sticker on right. It would also be critical to steal a glance at the little oversight terminal or whatever you'd call it to make sure no one is manning it, but not to be all obvious and "ooh, is The Coast Clear???" about it. And then you could, in theory, save six bucks on some chicken wings.

I believe the wife recently scored some Rainer cherries @ 5.99 lb but wouldn't u know it she rang them up as green seedless grapes which were on sale @99 cents a pound

Emptying your groceries from your cart onto a conveyor belt: No problem!
Taking your groceries from a table and putting them back in your cart: No problem!
Taking your groceries to your car and once again unloading them: No problem!
Taking your groceries home and unloading them and then putting them away: No problem!
Holding your grocery over a piece of glass and then putting it into a bag: THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!

If only CVS or Walgreen's had Trader Joe's mandatory banter-about-your-purchases policy for their cashiers.

I don't understand how Trader Joe's always has cashiers a plenty and Walgreen's has like one person running the entire store. Walgreen's margins
on sales have to be higher than a grocery store's approaching zero profits. Yet it takes 20 minutes to buy a pack a gum and a newspaper at Walgreen's.

Try the cosmetic counter. They will check you out.

I'm not angry that there are self-checkouts. I'm angry that enough people can be duped into using them as a "convenience" that a place like CVS can eliminate checkers altogether. Then we Douchebag CVS about once a month around here.

I think the elimination of self-checkouts at Jewel is a step back toward a more civilized society. Huzzah!

I think the Big Candy, Big Gum, and Big Sleaze Magazine lobbyists got to Jewel. The sales of impulse purchases are probably way down since less people were waiting in line at the regular checkout.

Jewel was formerly part of SuperValu and they were sold to a Wall Street investment firm. This firm is hoping to sell Jewel off for more money. So they dumped the preferred card and they are getting rid of self-checkout. I think most people are honest, but there are those who take steak up to the machine and put in the banana code.

Maybe they decided it wasn't a great idea to make their customers work for free. I don't see the value other than to the store that is convincing people something is "convenient" when it's really just a cost-savings effort for a corporation that has already charged you for the checkout crew.

That's crap. I'll do extra "work" to not be hassled with small talk and people asking me if I'm having a party.

And, of course it's cost-savings. Nearly every aspect of your shopping experience is tainted with the stink of cost-savings. Why draw the line at this?

When they see you buy balloons and vodka four times a week, you'd think they know it is no longer a party.

I would usually not scan one item at the self checkout just to make up for the extra work I am doing.

Definitely cost saving. The service costs and frequency of breakdowns don't help, not to mention they are several years old and behind the curve at this point.

and what about the employee that has to stand there and twiddle their thumbs until someone needs some kind of assistance ?

i understand it's not a 1:1 ratio of workers to checkouts but you're still putting an employee over there to basically do nothing 90% of the time . you must be qualified to do that job if you've stood holding the "slow" sign in front of a construction zone before

This news really sucks. I use those things all the time cause its much faster than waiting in line.

The real question is will Jewels start having more lanes open to compensate? The Jewels by me (addison and elston) is probably the trashiest jewels in the entire chain, you go in there at night and there's one lane open with 25 people waiting in line.

All of these stores need at least one cashier that is over 21.

i would also like to propose a separate lane for extreme couponers......fuckers should all have to stand in line together and suffer

i was behind a lady once who had a million coupons and i was biting my tongue..then she wanted a rain check for something because it said limit 5 and they only had 3, mind nearly exploded

I used to go the Jewels at the Brickyard (Narragansett and Fullerton) all of the time after a good workout to grab a Muscle Milk. Usually during late night hours so I always used the self checkout. In fact, their self checkout has the conveyor rollers, so it made the process very easy without having to make sure the dumb ass computer acknowledges what you just scanned.
