I've always maintained that Seinfeld is highly overrated. Like, very highly overrated. I've seen every single episode, some multiple times, but I just never could reconcile just how much people liked it. I think a lot of it had to do with Seinfeld himself... the stand-up bits in the show are bad, and his character was the least funny character for me. But all the love it got... it didn't make sense to me. I think that made me like it worse, and made me ultimately dislike the show more than I really did.


I just finished watching Curb. I had been watching it slowly over the past few weeks. My perspective on everything has completely changed. First of all, I appreciate Seinfeld SO much more now, now that I get that Larry was the guy behind the show. Just having an understanding of Larry David, and how brilliant he really is, instantly changed everything I ever thought about Seinfeld.

Back to Curb... Curb is by far the best comedy TV show I have ever seen, and it's not even close (duh, I know a lot of you are saying). Nothing even approaches it. Seinfeld isn't in the same atmosphere. Curb is so much better. It deserves everything Seinfeld has, times a billion.


Anyway, I'm not really sure there was a point to this. The TLDR is that everyone should watch Curb, even if you didn't love Seinfeld. It's the best comedy ever.

I loved Seinfeld.

Never liked Curb. I've probably watched 3 or 4 episodes I wanted to like it but I just find Larry David difficult to watch in the bad way. Jason Alexander did the same kind of things in a more entertaining fashion. He's a better Larry David than Larry David.

I even tried to like that Clear History movie, watched the whole thing, not very funny.

Interesting, didn't expect that. I'm going to try that Clear History movie... sounds like it's pretty similar to Curb.

I think the deal with Seinfeld was that it wasn't George's Show. You just got him in doses and it really worked.

I don't think a Coztansa show would have worked where it was just about George the whole time. That's what I think Curb is. No offense, Frank.

The earlier seasons of Seinfeld were my favorite ones. George's character became a little too much for me to handle later on, always raging over stupid shit and such. I really enjoy the subtlety of the comedy in the earlier seasons.

Curb is great as well. I really enjoy it how whenever Larry doesn't do anything that bad or actually does the right thing, people still lose their shit on him. I haven't watched Curb lately but I might start again by watching the episode where he befriends a sex offender because he's good at golf and has good tips.

Also, The Costanza character is a slightly softened version of the real Larry David. As unlikeable as the four Seinfeld characters were, you could identify with them in some small way. Larry David is just an asshole, totally irredeemable, and uncomfortable to watch. But funny as hell.

I like Seinfeld & I like Curb,but while I may chuckle here & there at both,I laugh my ass off (that's a lot of laughing) at King of Queens. On that show,everybody is funny down to the supporting players. The camera angles (showing Doug staring at food in the microwave from the microwave!) and goofy situations all work.

I saw both Seinfeld and Jay Leno perform their standups in person. Jay was funnier. Seinfeld is witty,but witty doesn't always get laughs.

Those stand-up clips were forced to setup an episode. That's why they got rid of them later. I don't think that's a fair representation of his actual set. I thought he was a brilliant stand-up.

On the Mt.Rushmore of stand-ups that I've seen. Eddie, Chris Rock, Seinfeld, and I'll keep the last one secret to stop people from bitching at me.

That makes sense, I just thought those clips were so unfunny so it shaped my thoughts on Seinfeld as a whole. I was wrong about him, I do like his stand up and his Coffee online show is very very entertaining. The episode with Larry David is actually what made me watch Curb.

Jim Gaffigan is funnier than both of them on stage.

Seeing a few episodes of Curb put in perspective Larry's part in Seinfeld. I think Seinfeld was much more tame not being on HBO. Plus they managed to talk about taboo subjects in a somewhat polite manner. Curb has its following, but it's way more offensive than Seinfeld and Larry David is not quite as good as anyone on Seinfeld. Seinfeld is not overrated. It was an incredibly successful show that continues in regular syndication 15 years later. It was the one show that knew not to jump the shark and that it was better go off the air while the show was still good. Seinfeld is the best sitcom because it managed to have all sorts of different sets even though it was filmed on a stage. The major characters were great and all the guest characters with minor roles were terrific. The fact that episodes like the Soup Nazi continue to be discussed shows how great of a show it was. When was the last time you discussed a specific episode of Friends or any other sitcom? It probably didn't happen because those shows weren't watched by everyone or aren't worth remembering.

Curb got old very quick. Very predictable, always connect the dots in the end, not very witty when you do the same thing every single time.

Seinfeld, its fine for reruns.

Wittiest TV is Simpsons and Family Guy. Nothing is edgier than Family guy, I give them total credit for being a great show for 5-7 years that Fox wouldnt sell the rights to, but also wouldnt put it on full time. It was the "When the Magic Show doesnt work" pull if after 2 episodes and put on Family Guy.

The people at Fox always knew it would be a hit and loved giving the public small tastes and seeing what they thought. Per Phil Rosenthal in a discussion had with him at Justins on Southport! Of course if you dont know who Phil R is, then it doesnt matter.

carlin's gotta be in the team picture, right? i get that he's not necessarily too popular with people who don't like him (wow, what a fucking concept i just came up with there =) but i mean.... the dude had a serious run of quality starting with the HBO specials in the late 70s through the 80s and into the 90s where he was just on fucking point. i'd go as far as to classify him as one of my favorite contemporary philosophers (the concept that the planet created humanity to bring it styrofoam is just so beautiful i can't help but dig it)

and ummm, yeah, he was rufus in bill and ted's excellent adventure. gotta love the metaphor there..... two hapless losers playing in their own little garage band are told that their music is the #1 key in ushering in the utopian society of the future BUT ONLY IF THEY PASS THEIR HISTORY EXAM and btw, hi, i'm george carlin [sitcom entrance applause] and here's a time machine.

fucking wicked concept, if i must say so myself. and i'm an odd one whose mind was blown when i first saw carlin doing standup and i thought "omfg.... rufus does standup?" --- things got better from there on out.

also, that EP of the george carlin show ("george meets up with an old friend" methinks?) where he comes across weed for the first time in ~25 years is suitably hilarious.
