Emmy Awards 2013: Moving tributes to Cory Monteith, James Gandolfini don't please everyone
Jean Stapleton, Jonathan Winters and 'Family Ties' creator Gary David Goldberg were also singled out for special tributes, but there was no such love for Jack Klugman and Larry Hagman, among others

By Ethan Sacks / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Published: Sunday, September 22, 2013, 10:46 PM

Actress Jane Lynch honors her 'Glee' co-star Cory Monteith during the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
The Emmy Awards devoted an unprecedented amount of airtime to pay emotional tribute to a select five late television talents — but not everyone was moved.

James Gandolfini, “Family Ties” creator Gary David Goldberg, “All in the Family’s” Jean Stapleton, comedian Jonathan Winters and “Glee’s” Cory Monteith each received a special sendoff.

“You all knew James Gandolfini the actor, I was lucky enough to know Jim the man,” a teary Edie Falco said of her “Sopranos” co-star. “It’s Jim the man I will miss most of all.”

Actress Edie Falco gets choked up sharing her memories of 'Sopranos' co-star James Gandolfini. Those honors, however, came at the expense of TV legends “The Odd Couple” Jack Klugman and “Dallas’” Larry Hagman, who each received one final Emmy snub.

“I think it’s criminal,” Adam Klugman told The Associated Press before the telecast. “My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days.”

Most controversial of all was the sendoff to the 31-year-old Monteith, who was never nominated for an Emmy in life and was found dead from a drug overdose in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13.

“His death is a tragic reminder of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction,” Monteith’s “Glee” co-star Jane Lynch said in her tribute speech.

“Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss for all he could have been.”

Actor Rob Reiner pays tribute to his on-screen mother-in-law, 'All in the Family' star Jean Stapleton. Robin Williams delivered the first tribute of the night — to his “Mork & Mindy” co-star Winters, who passed away in April at the age of 87. "Jamming with Jonathan was like dancing with Fred Astaire,” he said.

Michael J. Fox paid tribute to the man who “changed my life” and launched the actor’s career — Goldberg.

Hagman, Klugman and the other television personalities who passed away during the past 12 months got the more typical cameo treatment in the “In Memoriam” montage at the end of the show.

"Saying goodbye is part of life, but it's never easy," summed up Rob Reiner in his tribute to his former on-screen mother-in-law, "All in the Family's" Jean Stapleton, who died May 31 at the age of 90.

They should've just went w/ the usual memorial. From what I hear, this was all because they wanted to do a special memorial for that Glee jag, but didn't want it to seem like they were just singling him out. So they just picked 4 others & came up w/ this, missing a whole slew of others. Honestly, who gives a flying fuck to that doped up Canuck & that shitstain muck that is Glee?

I'm surprised I didn't start this thread. It's typical. They patronize every thing the "flyover" states hate about Hollywood. Klugman & Hagman were huge television stars. Last night though it was slumming movie stars (that "do" TV) that get the the big awards like Michael Douglas and the guy Jeff from that news show nobody watches. It happens every year. The Emmys always cowtow to these types or anybody with a British accent. I'm glad Klugman's son said something. The Glee kid was Geigh and a drug addict.I should say, nothing wrong with Geigh, but if you are straight, you are a 2nd class citizen in Hollyweird. Nevermind a guy like Klugman who beat throat cancer about 20 years before he died.

Hagman was as huge of a TV star as has ever existed.

I'd never heard of that kid until he died.

That's crazy. The only character more recognizable than jr is fonzie. People don't care about the past and I guess I'm old.

I can remember watching dukes of hazard then playing while my parents watched Dallas. I caught Dallas on soap net about 10 years ago. What a great show.

And don't forget Klugman was also Quincy. They named a train station after him, for god's sake!

His role in Jeanie alone was iconic.

Dallas was just a bonus that put it way over the top.

Odd Couple. Quincy.

But I'm sure Glee will be watched for decades.

Hagman was slow, tiny, and white. He could never compete against the great TV stars of today like D.L. Hughley.

Sure, that's what his IMDB entry says. They always exaggerated their heights back then. He was really around 5'8.5" or so. Besides that, Dallas could never compete with Thursday Night Football in the modern era.

That's true. He had great length. But look what he was going up against, Magnum P.I., Bosom Buddies, and NBC Magazine with David Brinkley. White. White. White and bad. Dallas would have a tough time going head to head with an average Tyler Perry creation.

The same thing happened in the last Oscars. They didn't even bother to show a picture In Memoriam for 10 seconds of Andy Griffith who had some good roles on the big screen.

Why would you snub Andy fucking Griffith?

As to this punk who OD'd, that really is ridiculous that they "honor" his "career".

I'm sure Ellie Walker had her reasons.

While you're bashing the drug addict who got his tribute, do you realize that Larry Hagman was a long time alcoholic, who received a new liver because he destroyed his own. I'm not pointing this out to bash Hagman. He got sober. Kudos. I actually believe he and Klugman did deserve tributes. Just get your facts straight before you start judging people.

But, he was a much more successful addict and that should be celebrated.

Oh I didn't know the Glee kid existed until he died. I did like the Gandolfini tribute though.

What fact? I knew all about Hagman. He still was a star for years and deserved a tribute. Also,it's a message board,I'll judge who I want.

That's a good point about this being a message board. Thanks for reminding me pud.

Like the weird old lady Just Say 'No' PSA's of the 80's, Quincy getting less face time than the dead gay junkie from Glee is just Hollywood's way of promoting drug use.

Larry Hagman did Burning Man a few years ago and became something of an MDMA enthusiast.

I'd post like a gentleman on this message board if I thought I'd be treated like one at any point.

It's amazing that Bernstein memes could even find their way into this thread.

This is the 2013 CSFMB.

We need a Boers and Bernstein section...
