If only CVS or Walgreen's had Trader Joe's mandatory banter-about-your-purchases policy for their cashiers.

I don't understand how Trader Joe's always has cashiers a plenty and Walgreen's has like one person running the entire store. Walgreen's margins
on sales have to be higher than a grocery store's approaching zero profits. Yet it takes 20 minutes to buy a pack a gum and a newspaper at Walgreen's.

pfft....you know nothing about horrible checkout waits if you haven't had to wait for muslims @ CVS. i live in a town with a mosque, so while my area's muslim per capita ratio is higher than most of youse, still, i've had at least 10-15 experiences where i end up behind some lady... or two... and the kids... and they inexplicably have 2-3 shopping carts full of stuff at CVS (which is odd in and of itself) but then they're always haggling about some coupon or price checking and then they have to run back and get something else if something isn't the price that they wanted/expected/etc....

meanwhile you're standing there with something refrigerated for 10+ minutes like "wtf?" while their kids are wide eyed all "ooooh look at the infidel" and then someone has to run out from the back room to open up another register while the actual lady looks rather pissed off that you're getting pissed off that IT'S TAKING 15 FUCKING MINUTES TO BUY MY BUGLER GOLDS AND A CAN OF FOSTERS YOU WEIRD BARTERING Caller Bob!

idk if there's something about jewel/dominicks/supervalu/safeway/albertsons/whatever that gets the muslims all hyped up about CVS, but then again i've rarely seen people with two carts full of stuff @ jewel.... let alone 3 @ CVS.

c'est la vie. at least if they're buying soda and american shit @ CVS they're not buying whatever-it-is they cook on beautiful days where you go outside and it's like ARGHHHH CHEMICAL WARFARE and you're resigned from allowing that beautiful crisp 72 degree breeze into your house cuz it's coming in with the aroma of creeping death.

Check out clerk is a position that wont exist in the near future. The technology exists to ring up your purchase as you remove the item from the shelf, then you can pack your groceries right into the bag in your cart. No more waiting in lines.

Why is this sad? There's many better options out there for groceries. Jewel and Dominick's have dominated this area for decades. Its their fault they're sinking now.

Dominick's occupies an utterly useless position now that Mariano's, Whole Foods, and the Fresh Market do the upmarket thing better. $4 for a gallon of milk in what's otherwise a Jewel; get the fuck out.

but the thing is they aren't really an "upmarket"

i've never been to Mariano's but Whole Foods produce and meat/seafood are in another galaxy from Dominicks'

you really would be better off going to Aldi

I don't know that Dominick's is completely useless. They have deals sometimes. You just have to use their online coupon thing JustforU that works with the store cards. They've had milk offered on the online coupon site for around $2 for over a year, so I think you may be a little out of touch with the $4 milk comment.

The lower performing Dominick's stores will eventually go out of business. But usually the stores that Dominick's stores that have self-checkouts are the stores that do more business.

Jewel's decision to eliminate self-checkout has been in the works for several months. It's just not something that is talked about in the mainstream news media. Coupon people in the Chicago area have known for a while. At first it was a bit of surprising move, but after they dumped the preferred card, after 20 years or however long they had it, anything was possible.

I think there is a lot of grocery competition with Mariano's moving in and other stores popping up to replace stores that have closed. The only reason that Jewel hasn't gone belly up is because they have loyal customers who drop $50 to $200 on a regular basis. The Dominick's Fresh Stores were always better looking and better quality than Jewel. But Jewel just had more loyal customers who didn't care about price.

Honestly if you are all about saving money you just take your all store ads to Walmart and pricematch all the stuff you want to buy. You save time and gas money by just going to one store to snap up all the loss leaders.

Dominick's consistently have the slowest cashiers of any grocery store. I've stopped going because even if something were on sale, the aggravation from waiting in line while a bumbling cashier takes forever to get people out of there isn't worth it.

Jewel & Dominick's are the K-Mart & Venture of the grocery business. They might as well just save themselves the millions in losses they will inevitably take, and just close now.

So where do you go for your groceries as opposed to Jewel?

Mariano's, Whole Foods, Aldi, Trader Joe's, Meijer, Woodman's, and Caputo's are all better compared to Jewel or Dominick's.

$4 for a gallon of milk? Does it come with gold flakes in it?

Let's just all agree that Ultra Foods is the worst. The WORST, Jerry!

The Ultra Foods locations I've been to are decent and they have self-checkout. They are better than the Cub Foods that they replaced. The prices are consistently lower than Jewel and Dominick's everyday prices. Like any grocery store a lot of a person's experience is based on the local store. But there are some stores that are better than others and encountering a bad store doesn't make all the stores in the chain bad. If the whole chain was bad they would be out of business.

Ultra Foods: Great Prices, I agree. But they are constantly out of stock on a bunch of items, and they have the worst meat and produce I have ever seen.

I agree on the produce and that's probably true about some of the meat. I don't typically buy meat or produce there. Yes, they do run out of stuff, but that just means you get a rain check and then when it's not on sale for 3 or 4 weeks after the sale you get 6 of the items for the sale price. The way you avoid going there and the store being out of stuff is by shopping on the first day of the sale as early in the day as possible any time after 6 a.m. Stores typically run out of things by later in the day and they don't restock till their next truck or whenever the stuff comes in typically the next morning. The people who go on the last day of the sale later at night are out of luck.
