Shoppers who dislike those self-checkout kiosks at Jewel-Osco will be pleased with the grocer's plans to ditch them in some stores.
The plan from the Itasca-based chain comes on the heels of a move to ditch its customer loyalty cards.
Jewel-Osco has more than 170 stores in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa and was acquired in March by an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management. Store officials said they plan to hire more cashiers and add shorter express lanes.
Stores that have already eliminated the self-checkout, according to the Daily Herald, include those in Glen Ellyn, River Forest, Palatine, Libertyville, Schaumburg on Schaumburg Road, Arlington Heights on Vail Street as well as in South Suburban Frankfort and in Chicago on Ohio and State streets and Harlem and Foster avenues.
A company spokeswoman said loss prevention and a desire to improve customer service were factors in the decision.

The Jewel on Vail Street? I'm surprised they even have room for more than one checkout counter in that place. It's practically a bodega.

I used to go to the one in River Forest quite a bit, as it was the only store that I could find this particular mixed bag of celery and carrots. Sometimes it seemed like the self checkout would be longer than the regular checkout.

Well now it's filled with old ladies ringing up 117 items in the express lane.

I buy my produce at Joe's. You know, mangos, plantains, and plums with red on the inside.

First visit today to the Jewels across the street since the change. Grabbed a couple protein bars and proceed to pay. Customer Service lines are three deep with bluehairs w/full shopping carts. Spot a lane with no waiting just as this little old lady approaches w/ a full cart. Sweet old thing let me go in front of her. She was a hoot to chat with - saying she did one good deed a day and this was it, even jokingly wielded her newly-bought skillet in a threatening manner if I didn't move along.

Of course JORR was in my head the whole time as I smiled and considered the interaction otherwise wouldn't have taken place. Dammit!

But, what were you wearing?

Dude in front of me the other day was freaking out cause he couldn't ring up his organic yogurt quickly.

I laughed.

I was at da Jewels earlier today to get some milk and stuff. I eschewed self-checkout because two were out of order and one had a line. I was behind a haggard woman who was buying, shit you not, TWENTY-SEVEN 20-count packages of Robitussin Nighttime Nasal Relief tablets. First, the cashier said she couldn't sell more than two packs of cold medicine at a time, so she called her manager over, who contemptuously said that of course she could ring up more of them, she just had to put in an override. So for Nos. 3 through 27, she had to punch in a long code to override the pill-popper regulation. It went on like this for some time. I had to excuse myself from the line and wander off a little bit to not laugh/cry at the absurdity. This was around #20. By #27, the haggard old woman said that there was a sale on the pills, and that they were only $1.74. Manager called again. Manager is really fucking pissed at this point and just death-staring anyone in her vicinity, myself included. She says how dare you try to do a price override without calling Osco to confirm the price change. Calls, confirms, overrides, manager is just steaming at this point. Haggard woman reminds cashier that this is a tax-free purchase. Uh oh.

Finally, it's my turn, and the cashier apologizes profusely for the delay. My frozen waffles are thawing. I say "it's okay." She says, no, it's not okay, it's a bad system, and she's pretty much on the verge of tears by now. I say "well, I don't hold it against you or the store. It happens." She seems to appreciate this a lot.

Self-checkout is okay at times.

just dealt with this for the first time today. i didn't have a bad experience but this really blows in the grand scheme of things.

i can bag my own groceries usually better than the staff, and a lot of times the cashier has to do both jobs which slows the process. grocery shopping to me is like taking a cold shower. you want to get it done as fast as possible and even though it's incredibly uncomfortable, it has to be done.

i cannot stand being in line at checkout...i have the worst luck with being behind the slowest people in all creation. whether it's their brains forgetting signals to their hands to pull out a check and write on it, or having to swipe a credit card multiple times, or using way more cash than necessary and having to wait for their bloody change...it's just annoying.

this is backward thinking. JORR can stay in the 19th century all he wants. theft, schmeft.

oh, and hire more people. if you're going to take away convenience, add more fucking bodies! it was still undermanned today.

I'm sure there are all kinds of businesses that would love to get their clients to do the work themselves under the guise of "convenience". I'm thinking of starting a painting service where we show up with the paint and charge you for painting the rooms yourself. Now that's a 21st Century idea!

I'm going to open a restaurant where you make your own pizza.

We give you the dough, the sauce, the cheese. You pound it, slap it, you flip it up into the air. You put your toppings on and you slide it into the oven! Sounds good, huh?
