I think it's a horrible idea and the fact that most of these people seem to let the kids friends over for drinking is insane

I never understood this. As a teenager I freaking loved it but as a parent I would be cold and dead in the ground before I let this happen.

Ya know, if it's senior year summer going into college, and your son and a few frineds have a few beers that's one thing, but the high school drinking is crazy

Kids want to be adults and they want to do adult things. I agree with Spaulding that when something is so forbidden, the desire to do it becomes that much greater. So, while I don't believe taking a sip of a parent's beer is a big deal, I also don't believe that a parent should condone drinking by providing a venue for the party- and maybe buying the beer. Terrible idea and one that might end you in jail for a few days depending on what happens.

I'd say the same about teenage sex. You know your kid is going to do it. But you don't have to rent the hotel room for him. Let that little bastard get laid in the backseat like the rest of us.

My father threw me a small high school graduation party where a few friends and I got wasted. These were the group of friends I grew up with since kindergarten. Their parents knew about it, keys were taken and everyone understood that no one was leaving for the night. It was fine.

As I have gotten older, however, I now understand how horrible of an idea it was.

When I was about 17 years old I had a '69 Nova that was all jacked up. One day I parked it on a side street in Sauganash right near the church to make out with a girl. Let's just say the car didn't exactly fit in with the Cadillacs that were driven by Eric Bolling's dad and Dennis O'Shea's mom. So we're in the backseat and I've got her pants down and suddenly somebody is tapping on the window. I see it's two cops. One of those Sauganash assholes called the cops on me for parking on his street? Fuck! I got out and the younger cop starts yelling at me asking what I was doing. I thought it was pretty obvious. I thought the prick was going to punch me. But the older cop told him to relax. He took me aside and said, "I've got a kid your age. I'm gonna tell you what I tell him- park in the Forest Preserve."

What about home from college?

A respectful question to the good dolphin, of which I am sure he's heard before:

Is it the notion of seeing your kids drink that upsets you? Would you be just as upset if they drink away from home?

The earlier you start drinking and the more you drink at an early age the more susceptible you are to issues down the line. To encourage or allow it is terrible parenting. You should be doing your best to not only not allow them to do it but to make it clear that they shouldn't be doing it.

You do your kids no favor training them to drink for college. They'll just have a head start and become a big drinker quicker.

One of my business partner's friends had a quarter pound of weed that his mom found and threw out. The kid complained and his parents reimbursed him in cash. These guys are a lot younger than I am. I can't imagine something like that happening with anyone I grew up with and their parents.

You're probably right. But the idea of my kid learning how to drink at college with kids who have been drinking for years is sort of scary, too.

Would you prefer they already drink like a junior when they show up? I don't really think that is better.

I doubt many freshman show up and say "I've been drinking in my parents basement for two years, no reason to head to this huge frat party and get drunk. I'm going to stay home and have a glass of wine and go to sleep".

My mom just turned a blind eye to the parties. She was out of town and we decided a toga party would be the ticket. (Pro tip: it was incredibly stupid). I had a friend that consumed way too much and he passed out early on. The party continued and a good time was had by all. I woke up in the morning and the house is full of empty cans, full ashtrays, drunken people and to top it off the house smells like an underground El station. I noticed my passed out friend was gone and it struck me as odd that he would leave so early. I asked another friend who was passed out on the couch what happened and why does the house smell like piss. He said that sometime in the early morning hours, our passed out friend awoke and proceeded to use the living room chair as a toilet. Not only did he lift the cushion he also attempted to flush it several times. That was a hard one to cover up from my mom. I blamed the urine on the dog, we both knew the truth but the lie kept everyone happy.

I'd prefer that he has been exposed to alcohol prior to college. A lot of the kids I saw that weren't familiar with alcohol were the ones who ended up really sick or in the hospital. They didn't have any control, and didn't understand how much they can/should drink. They tried to keep up with those who had been drinking for a long time. Just saying I'd prefer a happy medium. Familiar with alcohol, but not a drunk.

I don't even say that now.

Yea, I mean I know you're just being a douche, but I'm speaking under the assumption that like most kids, they will probably drink (or break the law, if we want to be dramatic). Both in high school and in college. I won't encourage them to drink if they don't want to, if that's what you were implying.

Are you going to teach your kid how to drive drunk properly too?

I got my first taste of alcohol at around 6 when someone left a can of Old Style unattended and by 14 the Arab corner store allowed me to buy my own liquor. I was told not to do it but I did it anyway. I think a better approach is not saying no but explaining the dangers of doing it. It is always better when you allow your kids to make the decision you wanted them to make.

Did you drink before you went to college?

At least for the people I knew, not understanding led them to be more cautious. The ones who already knew how to drink went out and drank heavily right from the start. There are a lot of studies about how the earlier you start drinking the more likely you are to have problems later.

The last thing I would want my kids to do is go to college with a built up tolerance for alcohol. Let them build it up there slowly instead of being Frank The Tank at freshman orientation.

Look, I don't want him to be frank the tank, I'm not even implying that. If they make a decision to drink in high school, I'm not going to flip a lid. I drank in high school. The notion of going to school without ever drinking scares me. My experiences at college were not like yours. A lot of kids who hadn't drank were out of control when they first started, and a lot of that had to do with trying to keep up with "frank the tank" type of kids.
