Contract expires after the season. He knows NY can be a complete disaster in a hurry, A Rod, Jeter, etc...all still due $$$.

Little known fact. Before Girardi took the Yankee job and he was unemployed for about a year, could have lived anywhere in the world. He chose to live in Deerfield, IL. He knew he would be taking a job elsewhere, so he knew it would be temporary.

The guy is a long time Cub fan, Northwestern Guy, Joliet.

You want Ditka status in this town. Manage the Cubs to a World Series. Has to be the most tempting managerial job i in sports. Also, assuming you are bouncing off a low point. Not far from the low point, but still, 2nd half of this season should have been a lowpoint.

With Cano out of the Cubs price range maybe the 5 year 75 million contract for Girardi?

I've always said that the Cubs are a big name manager away from winning a World Series. I don't know why they didn't try it before.

A called asked Dan why he thought he thought Girardi would be a good manager. Bernsie said he could find some metrics and stats (sure you could) to prove it, but what he really thinks is that Girardi is "A SMART GUY."

I don't think it's a matter of Girardi being smart so much as it would mean the Cubs are relying on a Yankee for success. Dan gets googly-eyed at all things New York from time to time, probably because his wife is from there and his sister lives there. I particularly remember that interview with Susannah Collins (godspeed) where she said she lived in Brooklyn and so he had to start droppin' the names and locations of his favorite artisan bakers and fishmongers to show he had BKLYN-cred. This would have been supremely irritating had it not cockblocked Leery and his terrible flirting at 50,000 watts, which instead made it pretty funny.

So yeah, I think it's more about romanticizing The Glorious New York Yankees than anything objective about Girardi himself. It'll just feel good to say it took someone with the pedigree of A Great Standard-Bearer Franchise, combined with Boston's team of Really Smrt People. Ironically, Girardi is from Illinois and played for the Cubs, which subjects him to even more meatball sentimentality than Sandberg got when he wanted the job.

EDIT: that typo was not intentional, swear to God, but I submit that it be used at all times for the Cubs' executives until they fucking do something

Girardi knows exactly what he is getting when he comes here. coming from NY media and attention, cubs will be a downgrade, which is unusual and he knows how shitty the club house is. Which I do think is a big deal, when they have press conferences, media, etc. Essentially, hard to keep a secret in a room where everyone can hear you talk because it is so small. Basically, he knows he crap that wears on guys everyday here. he has been here.

I look forward to his arrival.

Basically cant think of a better option.

Good breakdown of it. Gotta agree, though I've wanted Brad Ausmus to come here for some time as well.

Any chance Robin gets fired and Ozzie gets a second chance?

The Cubs could use someone with a championship pedigree.

In recent years I have tried harder to not be a Sox fan that takes joy in Cub fan's torment. This is simply too rich though and just need to sit back and watch the fun. Girardi is the answer! Like Dusty and Pinella weren't the saviors either. I admire the faith though.

The talk of Sandy Alomor Jr as a manager seems to have died down from the past few seasons. I think he would be a great choice and could really grow with the team.

If I were Theo, I would be looking for a guy with a proven track record in developing young players. Girardi did some of that with the Marlins. I'm not sure he wants to do it again.

I think Girardi is a guy who makes sense for the Cubs, but the timing probably isn't exactly right. I don't see them as a real contender next year, but if they play well enough to be close, Girardi might manage in a way that isn't exactly in sync with what the Real Smart People from Boston want. He's already had that problem down in Florida once before. I don't think Theo is looking for a guy he might not be able to control.

I'm not comfortable saying the Miami situation was indicative of anything greater than Jeff Loria being fucking bananas.

What is the reasonable amount of blame to put on coaches/managers for Castro's and Rizzo's struggles? How can you prove that manager X is better at developing young players? It's possible that the young players that a manager with those supposed skills is just better at baseball than Castro/Rizzo so they look better by association.

That's not meant to defend Dale. I honestly don't have a strong opinion one way or the other whether he should be retained. I'm still trusting the front office and if they believe a change would be for the best then I'm on board for the time being.

I'm not saying Sveum is necessarily the right guy for the job, but the Cubs have a lot bigger problems than who is filling out the lineup card on a daily basis.

It's nearly impossible to know from a fan's perspective but if he is a big reason why Castro and Rizzo didn't get better, he's a bigger problem that you are alluding to.

Wittenmeyer suggested this was the case with Castro as well as Barney on Screamy and Dopey yesterday. He said the coaching staff tried to get them to change their approach at the plate all through spring training and early in the season with disastrous results.

But maybe Castro is like J'Marcus Webb, doesn't care and will just try to coast thru on what talent he has. Could be the case, as fans we likely won't know.

But I agree that if Sveum has anything to do with Rizzo and Castro's regression this year, get rid of him ASAP.
