Well, I think bringing him in would accelerate the path to respectability. Plus, one could argue Girardi's biggest contribution would be working with developing talent vs. filling out the lineup card when the team is actually good.

He did a pretty good job with a shitty Marlins team that had the lowest payroll in the league. IIRC, they contended for a WC spot when no one thought they could.

It's do or die time for Theo and the boys now. Usually the GM gets to bring in his guy 1 time, this will be their 2nd guy. If this one doesn't work, Ricketts needs to nut up and make changes.

A little alarmist. I don't think he was going to be here after next year anyway.

I said it in the off season thread but Girardi does 3 things that a lot of managers only do 1 or 2 of.

1. Commands respect
2. Tactical commander/teacher
3. Does not approach the job from a standpoint of comfort or settling. He isn't country club lou cashing a check and sipping drinks.

Unless you have been in the dugout with Girardi during a game, you have no way of knowing if #2 or #3 are true.

I agree he does command respect of his players.

No way to know for sure, but that is his reputation. Certainly, reputations aren't always valid, but I would be surprised if he was the opposite of 2 or 3.

I rip the Cubs management all year but no way can I say Sveum sucks. Every manager will get screwed by a decision here and there. I think he is a good baseball guy and I can't blame much of what has happened on him the last two seasons. It's not much of a horse race if you don't have a horse!

Still feel the same way BUT In game 161 in the 9th inning,Sveum let Barney bat with 2 on and the game on the line. The Cards just brought in a RH reliever to face Barney. Of course he hits into a double play.
I'm not sure who was left on the bench but there had to be SOMEBODY. It might be in-game decisions like that which cost him his job.

Unless I'm missing something here, is waiting two more seasons for a WS contender in the third a bad thing?

Plain and simple: Sveum was brought to keep the bench warm and get some major league managerial experience. He wasn't gonna be the long-term guy unless he performed miracles. When Girardi became available, it was a no-brainer - that is, unless Girardi goes somewhere else.

The part of this story everybody in the media has NOT mentioned: After leading the Brewers into the playoffs (as interim manager),the Brewer GM decided not to bring Sveum back. I wonder what the reason was back then.
Maybe some jealous Milwaukee upper management type sold Theo a bill of goods about his qualities in the first place.

Theo & Girardi agreed a long time ago that Joe would become the Cubs Manager in 2014. This has been planned for some time.
