It's time. Fuck the bullshit; the prodigal son needs to return home! If the Cubs aren't going to be serious title contenders for the next ~2-3 years, why not go the ultimate meatball route and appease the oldschool "beer and shot" crowd with the managerial appointment of a lifetime? You'll get that much more good will and perhaps even some novelty attendance to help the cause of upgrading the stadium.

If Ricketts was willing to splash the cash on Theo in order to buy the organization a good ~4 years to slum around the bottom of the league and grab some high draft picks whilst working on stadium renevation; methinks adding Ryno to the mix will get you at least 2 more years of mutiny-free fan patronage before the mindset of crotchety old folks saying "you don't get better by losing 100 games a year" catches on and really starts to hit the Cubs where it hurts.

He's paid his dues....he's put in his time. He's even gotten his feet wet @ a MLB club. Comeon Theo.... give us not just what we want, but what we need! #BringBackRyno!!!

It was a pretty big fuckup to groom Sandberg for the job for years and years, only to then not hire him because he had no major-league experience. Yeah, that was kind of the point: he instead had experience with the players in the organization and the organization in general. Then the Phillies hired him, lack of experience notwithstanding. So we developed a manager for the Phillies and lost him for nothing. Great work, guys.

You either missed the fact that Sandberg signed a contract with the Phillies, or you do not care.

no sarcasm was abused in the typing of this post.

that and i didn't know he got a proper longterm contract... i just thought he was interim?

either way, these are the chicago baseball cubs, which means you tear up that contract and come to the place you were always meant to manage.

regardless, this just mans that sandberg will come back when he's past it as a manager to end his days as an underachieving manager!

When Mike Quade is your answer, then you may wish to reconsider the question.

Sandberg will get fired from the Phillies. Things are going to be bad there for a while. Just watch.

You said the same thing about the Dodgers.

How's that looking?

The Phillies don't have a billion dollar tv deal allowing them to buy a bunch of shit and then get rid of it and buy some more.

Wait. Hold the phone.

If David Kaplan just said that, I'm doing a 180° turn. Ryno is the guy. I refuse to share his thoughts.

das kapman currently has david haugh on right now. random fact: i once got blocked by david haugh on twitter for calling him a dipshit =(

btw, david haugh thinks that there is no other plausible alternative than joe girardi. we're clearly in steak dinner BOOM territory.

I'm sure there were evaluations done within the organization.

They didn't think he was the best candidate at the time.

He could have stayed...no one ever thought Sveum was the long-term answer, even two years ago.

I hate to revisit this debate but he had success at every level. The natural progression and the next step was the majors. Epstein was wrong and we've seen why. We lost a guy that I believe will be a really good manager if not a great one.

hey jimmy i come from a line of cubs fans, the patriarch of them being a proper beer and shot cubs fan. his buddy arnie dougan always came with us for the games (complete with giant cubs logo ass cushions and a transistor radio, no less) and it was a proper afternoon. years later arnie ended up being an usher circa section ~123 for a few good years, which meant that any ticket that got us in the ballpark eventually got us over to section 123 by the ~3rd inning.

you know, good baseball people.

and yeah, my grandfather is one of those "crotchety old men" who believes that you don't build a world championship team by losing 100 games a year. and neither do i, so i just wanted to point out the inherent sarcasm of my original post. i'm not going to start believing in this team and it's farm system chock full of herculean talent until they get some damn pitching.

That Mike Quade is still out of baseball altogether is really kind of stunning. The guy was a lifer and had experienced success throughout the minor leagues. With all the baseball jobs in the world out there, he can't get a single one?

They fucked up in not hiring him but there's an inside story that's never come out and no one in Chicago media seems to know what it is.

Ryno progressed through the minor leagues & was successful at every level. The Cubs organization made an investment in Sandberg & for some reason Theo decided to not cash in on it. Not hiring Ryne was a big mistake. He should be the Manager of the Cubs.

1. He was managerially developed by the old regime.

2. Some of the players like Castro, Lake, Barney, Castillo... have played for him during the season or spring training. That makes for a weird dynamic. I think they would have felt far too comfortable with him and would have started to tune him out.

3. They planned on losing for at least 2 years while they cleared salary and acquired prospects. It would awfully hard if not impossible to keep the same manager for all the transition stages.

I hate the team he has to deal with in philly. Good luck. A ton of old money and pride on that team. He has already gotten up Howards ass about being lazy and out of shape. He is going to have a storm to weather there for some time unless they start trading away guys like Howard, Rollins, Halladay, Lee.

Theo thought Sveum was too hard on his precious Rizzo and Castro. Can you imagine how hard Sandberg would have been on them?

Beckett's talent no longer makes up for his attitude. Those 2 years he was phenomenal but he is done. His attitude got worse with success. The quick demise of that Boston team was led by him.
