 Post subject: The Michael J. Fox Show

If NBC could ever be guilty of being smarmy, this is exhibit a. this show was so poorly written, conceived, and executed, the creators should be ashamed of themselves. this show has no shame at all...and it has no laughs.

there is also an epidemic of unfunny, all-too-precocious teens in sitcoms that drives me nuts. the girl was absolutely nauseating, and the college dropout son was painfully dull. the kids all reek of casting agency couch brats. studio larvae.

it's also too nice. there's no edge, and if there's no edge in comedy, it typically doesn't work. fox is too likeable, and none of the characters have any flaws relating to the plot of the show. or at least, anything that relates to anything interesting.

on top of that, the confessional-style motif has really worn out its welcome. it not only doesn't inspire any laughs, it's an inconceivable plot device for a show about a family. i had a similar gripe with "modern family". there's no way cameras will capture most of what goes on. just ditch it. you can still tell the story without a laugh track. there are plenty of sitcoms that are in one camera format without the audience.

fox was great in "the good wife" and i believe he could still command a show. but he needs a lot more than this garbage.

What was good was Back in the Game, which was on last night on ABC.

I'm committed to watching whats on the DVR as well, mostly because I really love his character/portrayal in The Good Wife and also thought his episode of Curb was pretty damn funny. I did read an early review out of Variety which said the review was hard to write because of how bad the show was, so I had an inkling that it wouldn't be that great.

He'll survive. Maybe they will change the writing a little. He made some really bad movies but he seems or is really likeable. It keeps his career going.

I love him. I've loved him for almost 30 years. Bad movies, cheesy tv specials, doesn't matter. There is no other actor or entertainer that has had that staying power for me. I hope it succeeds.

Wow! W_Z hit that review out of the park! My wife & I gave it about 10 minutes and that was hard to watch. It's to bad because we like Fox,too. Spin City was a good show but this one is on the other end of the spectrum.

The ratings (7.50) were nothing to write home about but it had a terrible lead-in from Parks & Rec. It looks like the new Robin Williams comedy scored big (same time slot as Fox)(15.22M viewers) because it gets the Big Bang Theory in front of it.

It's still sitting on my DVr and I'm dreading it.

I know you like wonder years. I was never a huge fan, i found it too saccharine and disliked most of the characters. I always felt like the narration was similar to the confessional style thing. What's the difference between that and the formula for the current shows?

With confessional style, each character gets to speak for himself. Narrator-style shows are told from one perspective.

IMO, The Office is the only comedy to get the confessional style correct. It hasn't been done as convincingly since.

I think Parks and Rec also does it well.

Sometimes better than The Office did.

I think both get it right.

But that's not really the problem w/ this show. It just wasn't funny. The writing was bland. It's like NBC told Fox, "Hey, we need a familiar face on TV, here's a billion dollars!" Then Fox shook hands w/ them & pulled some shit out of his ass.

But it's not really that different. Both explain jokes or the point of the story, which I think was WZ's main objection to it.

When the opening scene is the family running around because they are running late for school/work with a shaky Fox making quips about his kids,disease,whatever...keep it. As he walks down a New York street he runs into his old black boss who of course is witty and personable. For once I would like to see a black boss who is a mean SOB that insults all his underlings. THAT would be funny.

it's a different execution. i'll give you an example from "the wonder years", and an example from "modern family".

in the episode "square dance" of "the wonder years", there's the pivotal scene where the kids are gathered in gym class and the coach tells them that they're going to be studing a new course, square dancing. all the kids groan and the look on kevin's face is just pure disappointment. then the narrator chimes in, "Square dancing? What, in case we accidentally crash land in the Ozarks?" Immediately following that, a rush of girls come in, and everybody's expression changes.

in the episode "unplugged" of "modern family", there's a scene where cam and mitchell are looking for a preschool for lily. they go to try to get her into a school called billingsley, the "harvard of preschools" by showing off their cultural diversity...that they're gay and she's asian. however, the following couple is a disabled lesbian couple with a black adopted child. immediately following that sight gag, it switches to the confessional scene where they explain the situation.

all that happens with the narration is that it adds a notch of humor by adding a quip. the way it's said, compounded by kevin's expression, is funny. is it necessary? probably not...but it's a good line.

with the sight gag in "modern family", all the confession is doing is explaining the joke that's already there. while in "the wonder years", it's adding to the joke. and actually, if that line were used by one of the characters *in* the scene, it wouldn't have worked as well because it just isn't believable that a kid would've come up with a line like that. so in the MF example, it's taking away from the humor rather than enhancing it.

it's really more of a distraction to cut between scenes like that. comedy is about rythem. with narration, there is never a break in the flow. narration can sometimes be intrusive, too, though, if it's not necessary. but the confessional sequences don't really need to be in the shows...especially when it doesn't make sense like in MF and MJF. at least in "the office", there's a bit of humor in the fact that these guys think they're "on" when they're just office workers being filmed for a documentary.

and in "the office", a lot of times the confessionals did work because the joke in the confessional scene wasn't necessarily always part of the joke going on in the regular scene.

if that makes sense...

as a non sequitor, I hate Lilly from Modern Family more than any actor on television. If you are going to give a kid a part, wouldn't you at least chose one who displays the slightest bit of talent? She sounds like a child reading a first grade book when she delivers her lines. I'm not expecting Sir Lawrence Holmes or anything, but just give me a little bit of emotion or reality.

And having Marie from Breaking Bad was the wrong move. Her hateability factor is thru the roof
