I think it's from the 30s.

Anyway, I see it as little more than a naked attempt to incite. It's like that painting of Harold Washington in lingerie that Art Institute kid did. The only point seems to be to offend. I guess if you want to do that, it's your right as an "artist", but I don't think it's incumbent upon the viewer to seek some deeper meaning that probably isn't even there. Controversy for the mere sake of controversy, unlike the controversial yet thoughtful work of someone like, say, Neil Moore.

I would say in most cases you're correct, but sometimes certain people affect a far-out pose just for the sake of doing so.

I believe Samuel Johnson said something about education being the ability to tell the good from the bad and the genuine from the counterfeit and to prefer the good and the genuine to the bad and the counterfeit. This particular painting doesn't strike me as genuine.
